One of the best pitching matchups of the season highlights Monday's Major League Baseball action. Here are my top three totals MLB picks for this Monday.

Washington Nationals vs Los Angeles Dodgers
This is the first total I've seen all year that has opened at 5.5 -- a couple ended up there but didn't open at the number. No surprise as it's a matchup of Cy Young contenders in Washington right-hander Stephen Strasburg and Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw, who is the betting favorite to win a fourth career Cy Young Award.

Strasburg (10-0, 2.90) and Kershaw (10-1, 1.58) are attempting to join the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta and the White Sox’s Chris Sale as the only 11-game winners in the majors. Strasburg is the only undefeated qualified starter remaining in MLB, but Kershaw leads all of baseball in strikeouts (133) and ERA. Kershaw has won his last seven starts against the Nationals, going 7-0 with a 0.82 ERA.

The Dodgers are expected to activate starting outfielder Yasiel Puig before this game. Puig has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 3 with a strained left hamstring. He is hitting .237 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 186 at-bats. He is 1-for-5 career off Strasburg with a strikeout and RBI. Chase Utley can't hit Strasburg much, going 4-for-27 with seven strikeouts career. Adrian Gonzalez is 4-for-9 with a double against him. Bryce Harper, meanwhile, is 1-for-12 against Kershaw with seven strikeouts.

Jayson Werth is 9-for-29 with two solo homers and eight strikeouts. Daniel Murphy, the NL's leading hitter, is 3-for-10 off him. Ryan Zimmerman is 7-for-19 with an RBI. My MLB Pick is on the Under. Both guys are capable of throwing a shutout. The 'under' is 7-1 in Kershaw's past eight against teams with a winning record. It is 5-2 in his past seven vs. Washington.

Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox
Perhaps the biggest pitching surprise in baseball is Boston knuckleballer Steven Wright (not the comic). The 31-year-old probably has to be an All-Star as things stand as he leads the AL in ERA at 2.22 and is tied for first with three complete games.

Not bad for a guy who makes only $510,000. Wright has won five straight starts and allowed nine total runs in them. He only got a rotation spot because of an injury to Eduardo Rodriguez.

Wright only started throwing a knuckler in 2011 and pitched for six different minor league teams before making the majors. Wright did lose at the White Sox on May 3, but that's back when Chicago was a good team. Wright did have a quality outing, allowing two runs and three hits over six innings. The White Sox's Jose Abreu is 2-for-5 career off him with a triple, homer and three RBIs. Adam Eaton is 3-for-5 against Wright.

Chicago goes with No. 5 starter Miguel Gonzalez (1-2, 4.74). He was destroyed last time out, allowing seven runs and eight hits with four walks in just 3.1 innings against the Tigers. Gonzalez hasn't faced Boston this season. Hanley Ramirez is 3-for-7 career off him with two homers and four RBIs. David Ortiz is 3-for-15 with a homer and three RBIs. Bet 'Over.' It is 4-1 in Gonzalez's past five on the road. It's 5-0 in Wright's past five at home.

San Francisco Giants vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Could the Pirates actually be sellers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline? That would have sounded ridiculous at the start of the season but they are now three games below .500 and a whopping 15 games out of first place in the NL Central.

Of course this team has played in the wild-card game the past three years. They lost in that game to these Giants and Monday starter Madison Bumgarner on Oct. 1, 2014. Bumgarner threw a complete-game four-hit shutout that day.

The lefty is 8-2 with a 1.91 ERA this season and certainly in the Cy Young conversation. He has allowed more than three earned runs just once all season. The Giants are the hottest team in baseball in winning eight straight games to stretch their lead in the NL West to 6.5 games over the second-place Dodgers.

Bumgarner hasn't faced the Pirates this season. Josh Harrison has hit him fairly well in his career, going 4-for-7 with a homer. The Bucs go with lefty Jeff Locke (5-5, 5.92). He has been terrible the past two starts, allowing a combined 18 runs and 20 hits in 8.2 innings. Locke is a solid 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA at home this season. Take the Under offered in the MLB Odds. It is 5-1 in Bumgarner's past six starts. It's 4-1 in Pittsburgh's past five vs. a lefty.
