It is the afternoon series finale between Los Angeles and St. Louis and those betting baseball are at least contemplating if the Cardinals have cooled off the Dodgers and can earn a series split.

On a nice 6-1 run against the MLB odds, checkout what I am thinking today.

Pitching Matchup - McCarthy vs. Wainwright

Brandon McCarthy (5-1, 3.28 ERA) tweaked his knee during his last start Sunday, but that did not prevent him from throwing six innings of shutout baseball, conceding only two hits and striking out six against the slumping Cubs. McCarthy continues to showcase his skills when he finds a rhythm, he's only allowing a .229 batting average (.264 lifetime). During the daytime he's been even sharper at 4-0 and .161 BA allowed. McCarthy has no record against St. Louis is three starts with 4.15 ERA.

For those wondering if Adam Wainwright (5-3, 4.20) was approaching the finish line at 35, hold that thought. In the right-hander's past three starts he a puny 0.44 ERA and he's won four in row. Wainwright's success has come about with more off-speed breaking pitches and changeups, which has enhanced his fastball, which is topping out at about 91 MPH. He will look to keep Los Angeles hitters off-balance in the same manner and is 4-6 (3.28 ERA) against them.

Dodgers Rookie Helps Offense, the Cardinals are Killing Themselves

Make no mistake, 21-year old Cody Bellinger has been a catalyst for the Dodgers offense and helped them mask injuries to Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Turner. L.A. is 24-10 since his arrival and besides his power bat, Bellinger has been clutch in averaging close to an RBI a game. His batting average has dropped off into the .250's as word spreads about his weaknesses, yet he is still doing the job.

The fact is St. Louis is playing bad baseball. The offense is averaging 4.2 RPG (3.9 at Busch Stadium), the bullpen is the worst in the National League and they are the worst fielding team in the league if you count errors (T-14th) and total chances (11th). Long time St. Louis radio announcer Mike Shannon went off on the Cards Monday after yet another fielding mistake and nobody called him out on it.

Betting Odds, History and Bullpen Numbers

For those thinking about MLB picks, Los Angeles was sent out as -115 road favorite with a total of 8. The Dodgers have taken five of nine at Busch and the UNDER is 5-4. If this contest is tied in the late innings, as mentioned, the Redbirds bullpen is a disaster and the Dodgers have the best ERA in the senior circuit.

The Winner Is...

As much as I like the groove Wainwright is in, he has not been this effective over a series of starts since last July. As stated, McCarthy has been awesome in daytime baseball and Los Angeles has done rather well also at 11-4 this season. Don't empty the wagering account, just consider the Dodgers for a play.
