Boston's best starter takes on Tim Lincecum, a former Cy Young winner that has been struggling. The Red Sox appear to be the stronger team and a smart MLB Pick for tonight.

Boston Red Sox (Porcello) (-1 ½ R/+105) at LA Angels (Lincecum)
Last night, the Angels won the first game (2-1), when Angels’ superstar, Mike Trout, scored from 3rd on a Boston throwing error to gift wrap a 2-1 Angels’ victory.  Game 2 of the series takes place at 10:05 ET with arguably the best Boston starter, Porcello, facing the Angels’ weak link, Lincecum.  With the Red Sox on a 4-game slide and playing red-faced after Thursday’sembarrassing loss, we are eager to use the support of a 96% run line situation for tonight’s victory.

This is a battle of super-surger vs. towel-tosser.  At 55-45, Boston narrowly clings to the 2nd Wild Card spot but trails Toronto by 1 game and Baltimore by 2 ½ games for the AL East division lead.  As the “hunter,” they will be hungry!  For the LA Angels, it has been another lost season at 46-56 as they reside in the basement of the AL West and are a clear candidate to be a towel-tosser!

For the year to date, it is abundantly clear that the Red Sox are a better hitting team than the Angels.  The year to date OPS edge is .835 to .738.  Even with a home/road adjustment, it is still .790 to .731 favoring Boston. And as poorly as the Red Sox bullpen has performed this week, they still have a favoring year to date edge of .696 to .728.  But, our real advantage comes with tonight’s starting pitchers.

Due to injuries to their rotation, LAA took a chance on am injured, former CY Young winner.  Lincecum has been little short of disastrous.  His time in the “bigs” features an 8.70 ERA and his last outing saw him give up 8 runs in 1 1/3 IP before being yanked.  In his “previous life,” Lincecum faced the Red Sox twice, going 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA.   Would far rather back the slants of Red Sox’ starter, Porcello, who is 13-2 with a 3.57 ERA! This includes going 7-0 in his recent decisions and winning his last 5 starts.

We are certainly eager to make this play on the run line, as Boston has won 18 of 21 road victories by 2 or more runs, while the Angels have lost 25 of 26 home losses by 2 or more runs. I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB picks on the Boston Red Sox tonight.
