Handicapper provides MLB betting preview of Thursday afternoon's NL West battle between Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Francisco Giants
The Diamondbacks and Giants wrap up their series on Thursday afternoon and after studying the MLB odds boards, I think there is some betting value at a very big underdog price on Arizona here as Shelby Miller faces off with Johnny Cueto in this starting pitching matchup. Cueto was much better in his last outing against the LA Dodgers but was hit hard in his lone previous start this season here at AT&T Park in San Francisco allowing 6 runs on 10 hits in 7 innings against that same LA Dodgers team.

Shelby Miller
Arizona has been hitting well in this series against San Francisco pitching and have won four of their last five games overall. Shelby Miller will get the call to start in this game for the Arizona Diamondbacks and he had his last start cut short against San Diego when he was forced to leave the game in the 2nd inning after he scraped his right hand on the pitching mound after following through too violently on one of his pitches—he endured a throbbing pain in his hand from that point on and couldn’t continue to pitch through it.

It was a bizarre scenario to be sure but Miller threw a bullpen side session on Monday to get himself ready for this next start and he appeared to be in good shape coming out of that. Miller has been tagged for 12 runs in 12.2 innings of work in his first three starts and he is giving up more fly balls than he did a year ago but that might be a decent fit for him here in San Francisco where it isn’t easy to smash the ball out of the park.

Miller vs. Giants
Miller has a good track record against the Giants holding them to 3 runs or less in each of his previous five starts against San Francisco dating back to 2013. I am firmly convinced that for as good as Johnny Cueto is, he will be hard pressed to duplicate his success of 2015 with Cincinnati and Kansas City and there is ample evidence to suggest he is an overvalued commodity right now in the betting markets.

It’s worth noting Arizona’s bullpen has been very good in this series neutralizing the Giants in the latter innings and if that form continues for the Diamondbacks relievers here, this team could be very live to win this game late making Arizona a valueable MLB pick on Thursday at this underdog price at or near +150.
