At the beginning of the season, the Chicago White Sox were playing good baseball but have cooled off considerably. Wednesday, they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Angels. We’re going to look at the total for this contest with Miguel Gonzalez taking on Matt Shoemaker.

Chicago White Sox

Veteran Miguel Gonzalez comes in with a 3.83 ERA and 1.41 whip on the season but has been knocked around considerably in his last three starts. Spending most of his career with Baltimore, he has had a few opportunities to face the Angels over the past few years and he comes in with a high 4.42 ERA in three appearances, but Los Angeles is hitting just .217 against him. Over the span of his last three games, Gonzalez has given up 13 earned runs in just 17 innings along with an astounding 28 hits. With that being said, though, this is actually a decent spot for him to come in and pitch well enough to keep Los Angeles to a reasonable total as the Angels can really struggle at the plate at times. The White Sox offensively rank in the bottom of the league in most offensive categories and are currently hitting just .237 as a team, ranking them 21st. As well the White Sox rank 23rd, 24th and 26th in runs per game, hits per game, and OPS, respectively. I’ve a hard time believing they will come into this contest and put up enough runs to help get over the total.

Los Angeles Angels

Matt Shoemaker gets the start for Los Angeles and is coming off a stellar zero earned run, three-hit performance vs. Detroit. On the season, because of a rough start, Shoemaker has a 4.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, well above his career 3.82 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. For the most part, his high numbers this season are due to two bad outings, vs. Seattle and Houston, but for the most part he has been steady in keeping the runs and hits to a minimum. At the plate, like Chicago, Los Angeles ranks in the bottom of the league in most categories, currently hitting .236 as a team ranking them 23rd. Despite the fact they have arguably the best player in baseball, the Halos simply do not have a good offense across the board and rank 25th and 26th in OPS and runs per game. They may be able to manufacture a few runs, but at the end of the day there is a reason why this total is set so low.

MLB Odds

Oddsmakers have set the total for this game at 7.5 which seems low for an American League contest but for my MLB pick I will back the 'under.' Both these pitchers have shown at times this year they can pitch very well, and I expect them to do so against these light-hitting lineups. Once again, there is a reason why this line is so low.
