It will be a tough job to navigate our way through this “Transitional Thursday” of MLB betting as the weekend awaits, but there’s still a few good games on the slate to choose from in which we can find the betting edge.

Capper Catalano Record
157-135 -11.77 Units

Yesterday was the first poor night in a really long time as I broke the Coors Field rule and took the under the total and also backed Justin Verlander on a 2 unit play and although Verlander was pretty good, the Tigers bats were silent. Time to move on quickly and forget .

Miami Marlins (55-58) at Pittsburgh Pirates (60-53)
National League Central Division Contenders
The Pittsburgh Pirates are just 1.5 games behind a stubborn Milwaukee Brew Crew, but are right in the thick of things where the division title is concerned.

They have a very appealing matchup tonight as veteran Edison Volquez (8-7, 3.91) takes the mound and he’ll be opposed by reliever Brian Flynn (0-0, 6.10) who has only pitched 21 innings in the major leagues and has been less than impressive. Volquez has been very consistent and has a major edge against an inferior team such as the Marlins despite their improvement this season.

No McCutchen, Same Production
Despite not having MVP Andrew McCutchen in the lineup, the Bucs have still been able to play well and produce offensively. Catcher, Russell Martin, is hitting a very surprising .282 and we all know that he’s one of the best defensive catchers in the game and the difference maker on this team has been leadoff man Josh Harrison.

Josh Harrison
Not in their wildest dreams could Pittsburgh management have known that Josh Harrison would be this good. Harrsion is coming off of a 3 for 4 game with 2 runs scored to raise his batting average to .309. Harrison had a huge July when he went on a tear, knocking the ball out of the park every other game. In August, he’s continued to hit well.

Harrison is 11 for 22 in August with 4 doubles, a home run, and a run batted in. I keep thinking that Harrison will have a bad game, but he never does. Look for Harrison to play well to make up for the loss of McCutchen and against a subpar, inexperienced pitcher.

Boston Red Sox (50-63) at St.Louis Cardinals (60-52)
Fighting For Another Division Title
Players are moved in and out of St.Louis and their offensive numbers can go up and down, but the Cards always seem to be fighting it out for the top spot in the National League Central Division.

Tonight, they host an unproven pitcher in Brandon Workman (1-4, 4.08) and send out their ace, Adam Wainwright (13-6, 2.26) to the mound. The way that Boston has played this season and with Wainwright starting, I’m actually surprised that the betting odds aren’t -200 or greater. Currently, the Cards are a -174 betting favorite.

The Three Matts
You have to say that out of the “3 Matts” that the Cardinals have in their lineup, Matt Adams is the only Matt playing at high level. This is a trio that has great potential with Matt Carpenter as the key leadoff man, Matt Holliday as the team leader, and Matt Adams as the young upstart doing most of the work.

Holliday is been quite inconsistent with just 12 HR, 58 RBI, and a .267 BA and Matt Carpenter has shown flashes of starting to hit, but Matt Adams has been able to produce consistently throughout the season.

Although there’s been a major power outage for most major leaguers throughout this season, Adams has been able to pick up key hits and be the only Cardinal to really hit for average. He’s currently hitting .316 with 12 HR and 49 RBI. The power numbers aren’t necessarily there but the level of consistency is.

Adams has some nice split stats. He’s hitting .348 at home with 8 HR and 27 RBI, .353 in the month of August, and .423 in the month of August. I look for Matt Adams to possibly be the difference in any Cardinals game. Tonight, Adam Wainwright should be the difference in a very important ball game for St. Louis, which is why we will recommend them as an MLB betting pick tonight.
