The San Diego Padres are struggling to score runs, but they won’t need many in hosting the Chicago Cubs Thursday night. Join us as we recommend how best to use the betting odds.

Back in the loss column
Chicago had its three-game win streak snapped Wednesday, as it suffered a 4-2 extra-innings loss to the New York Yankees as -113 home favorites, while going 'under' the betting total for a fourth consecutive affair. The Cubs are a disappointing 6-15 on the road this season, but they may be able to turn that record around due to first baseman Anthony Rizzo hitting .346 in his last six games versus his former club. MLB handicappers will find that the franchise is 4-10 in its last 14 games versus NL West opponents.

Blanked, again
San Diego was shut out for a MLB-leading eighth time in 47 games Wednesday, as it attempts to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to the Minnesota Twins as -136 home favorites.
The Padres rank last in the league with a .221 batting average, but outfielder Seth Smith is hitting .427 at this ballpark in 2014. It’s important to point out that the franchise has won seven of the last 10 overall meetings in this series.

Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (0-0, 2.70 ERA) hasn’t completed six innings in any of his first three outings this season, including a no-decision effort in a 4-3 road loss to the St. Louis Cardinals last time out. The right-hander has put together an 11-14 record and 5.07 ERA in 39 career road appearances (35 starts). Arrieta allowed six runs (five earned) and five hits over three innings in his only lifetime start versus the Padres on June 20, 2010.

Padres starting pitcher Eric Stults (2-4, 4.50 ERA) was handed a 3-1 road loss by the Colorado Rockies in his last trip to the mound, as he surrendered two runs (one earned) and six hits over 6.2 innings of work. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 3.74 ERA in four home appearances, while he’s put together a 3-2 mark and 2.98 ERA in the month of May since last season overall. In six lifetime outings (four starts) versus the Cubs, Stults has registered a 1-4 record and 4.50 ERA.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Padres as one of their MLB picks, as they’ve won 19 of Stults’ last 26 home starts.
