We went 3-1 with our baseball picks on Sunday, but a Big Papi home run in the 9th inning left a sour taste in our mouth as we lost by ½ run due to this bash.
Washington Nationals (32-29) at San Francisco Giants (42-21): Strasburg vs. Vogelsong
This matchup is all about the pitching as Stephen Strasburg (5-4, 3.10) has pitched very well as of late, and he faces a slightly inferior pitcher with a better team backing him along with home field advantage in Ryan Vogelsong (4-2, 3.39). Both teams have played very well as of late.
Washington has won 7 out of their last 10 games, and are coming off a 6-0 destruction of the Padres in which their pitching was stupendous, and their bats came alive with 13 hits.
San Francisco has won 5 straight games after sending the Mets packing. In his last 9 starts, Stephen Strasburg hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs in any start. He’s also struck out 20 batters while allowing just 2 earned runs in his last 2 starts. His major issue is receiving run support, and against a top-rated defensive team like San Francisco’s, he could have trouble getting some support here. Strasburg will have to be at his best to pick up the “w” tonight.
Vogelsong, much like Strasburg, has been very consistent this season. In his last 8 starts, he’s allowed 4 runs twice, but has not allowed more than 2 runs in any other start, and has pitched some shut-outs. Although there are some capable hitters on each team, this game has "under the betting total" written all over it.
My Free MLB Pick: Giants/Nationals 'Under' 7 -139 at 5 Dimes (Buying ½ run)
New York Yankees (31-31) at Kansas
City Royals (31-32)Not the Same Yankees Team
The Yankees and the Royals finish up their 4 game series tonight, and the Yankees will have to work hard for the split as their offense has been very quiet. The Bombers send Vidal Nuno (1-2, 5.33) to the mound as he’s opposed by Jason Vargas (5-2, 3.28). The pitching edge goes to the home team in this matchup, but if Nuno simply keeps New York in the game, they can beat the Royals as a betting underdog.
After spending several years in the minor leagues, this player has showed major hustle and enthusiasm as a major leaguer and is the MVP thus far for New York. Although his numbers (6 HR, 28 RBI, .299 BA) aren’t eye-popping, Solarte has picked up huge hits in key spots to keep this team afloat while their key acquisitions have been inconsistent.
Brian McCann, who supposedly is one of the best hitting catchers in baseball, is hitting just .225. Jacoby Ellsbury came out of the gates super-fast this season, slumped, and has started to hit again. Ellsbury will never hit for power, but New York needs for him to hit more than .287, and be more of a difference-maker. Lastly, Carlos Beltran has been a bust, thus far. He’s been injured for most of his time as a Yankee, but the rest of the time he hasn’t produced like he did when he was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.Beltran is hitting just .218 with 5 HR and 16 RBI. New York payed these 3 men a lot of money and need more of a return on their investment.
The Royals offense is nothing to write home about. They have slightly above average hitters in Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer, but these players won’t win them a World Series Championship. One player that has played very well for K.C. has been Lorenzo Cain. In 145 regular season at-bats, Cain is hitting .331 with 2 HR and 24 RBI. This is a player that plays with a lot of emotion, and on a quiet Midwest team like Kansas City, this is just what this organization needs. In the last week, Cain is hitting .348 with 5 RBI, and is 5-for-10 with 1 double, and 1 triple against the Yankees. He should be in the starting lineup, and could be a factor in this game if Nuno pitches poorly.
I like the Yankees here as an underdog. Vargas is far from being one of the elite pitchers in the majors and the only way that the Yankees loses is if they beat themselves with mental errors.
