Floundering a bit in the NL playoff race, the New York Mets are big favorites on the MLB odds in Thursday afternoon's series opener against the Colorado Rockies.

Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets
Will the Colorado Rockies become sellers the next few days as the trading deadline approaches? Are the New York Mets going to add an impact player to help defend their National League crown?

We don't know the answers to those questions, but we do know those teams will be going at each other for a long, 4-game weekend set in Flushing. Thursday's lid-lifter has an early 1:10 PM ET start when Tyler Anderson tosses for Colorado opposite New York's Jacob deGrom. After opening -210, the Mets have dropped to chalk in the -175 to -188 range, the total also falling a half to 7 with Pinnacle favoring the 'over.'

These two teams met a little more than two months ago in Denver where the Rockies swept the 3-game set, each win coming as underdogs on the MLB odds. All three contests also fell 'under' the totals which ran from 10-11½ runs. New York has a decided edge when playing Colorado at home over the years, and is 15-10 vs. the Rockies at Citi Field. The Mets broomed four on this diamond from the Rockies last year, three staying 'under' the totals, and own a 10-game home win streak vs. Colorado with their last loss coming in August 2012.

Mets Coming Off Late Loss To Cards
Colorado just finished up a 3-game set in Baltimore, beating the Orioles in the final two games of the series and getting solid pitching all three contests. Good play recently has lifted the Rockies to within three games of .500 and gaining on a jam-packed NL wild card race.

It took a while for Anderson to register his first major league win, but he hasn't stopped since picking up that initial dubya just before the all-star break. The southpaw came out of the break with two more victories, all three of his wins coming at home. In fact, six of his eight starts have been at Coors Field where Anderson has registered an impressive 3.47 ERA while only allowing two homers in 36+ innings. Thursday will mark his first appearance vs. the Mets, and Anderson has dropped each of his two away games plus three of his four daytime starts.

New York dropped two of three to the Cardinals to begin the week, losing Wednesday's tilt late when Jeurys Familia blew his first save of the season. The Mets have fallen to third in the NL East, 5½ behind Washington with Miami between them, and are part of a 5-team package bunched within four games of each other for the wild card.

Battered around in Miami last Saturday, deGrom saw a string of three consecutive wins come to a quick end lasting only into the fourth and having surrendered five runs. New York had won each of his previous four assignments, the young righthander pitching to a 0.93 ERA in that span which included a 1-hit, complete game shutout at Philadelphia in his first appearance after the all-star break. He took a no-decision in Denver on May 15, working into the seventh and charged with three runs of an eventual 4-3 Colorado victory. Prior to then, deGrom had won both starts vs. the Rockies, tossing 15 scoreless innings against them with all of the action taking place in New York.

Rain Could Threaten Weekend Games
The series will begin under warm sunny skies, Thursday afternoon warming to 90º with a 10-15 mph SE wind (out to left). The rest of the weekend might not find Mother Nature cooperating as much with a good chance of rain in both the Friday and Sunday forecasts.

This is one of those matchups that pits great hitting (Colorado) against great pitching (New York). Normally, I side with the pitching in such affairs, and that's exactly what I'm going to do with my free MLB pick today as deGrom keeps Colorado bats quiet.
