With our Underdog Winner with the Seattle Mariners MLB Pick yesterday, our post-All Star Break record on this site is now 7-3.  $100 players are up +$460, here's today's selection.

Seattle Mariners (Paxton) at Pittsburgh Pirates (Cole) (-155)

This is yet another, as we come right back on the Mariners to sweep this short series as our PERCEPTION/REALITY Underdog Winner of the Day.

Based on their 3 consecutive playoff appearances and their well-publicized battles with St. Louis (and more recently the Cubs) for NL Central superiority, the PERCEPTION is that the Pirates will find a way to make their way to the post-season.  No such media hype is accorded Seattle, despite the fact these teams have matching records of 51-48.

Tonight, these teams face off in the 2nd of their early week, 2-game set.  Seattle followed my command with a 7-4 victory in the first game.  King Felix allowed 4 early runs but settled in and with an underrated relief corps held the Pirates scoreless after the 2nd inning.  The Seattle bats bombed Liriano for 12 baserunners and 7 runs in 3 1/3 IP, before the bullpen (who held Seattle scoreless for 5 2/3 IP) could put their finger in the dyke.

But, it’s the longer term story which has a SELL sign on Pittsburgh and a BUY sign on Seattle which draws our attention at this price for this contest.  As relayed yesterday, based on the OPS numbers, Seattle should have the 8th best record in the league, while the Pirates should have the 21st best record in the league.  This, despite the fact the teams each sit at 51-48 on the season.  Since a 12-3 run before the All-Star Break, the Pirates have gone 5-6.  Seattle is on a 5-2 run in the last week and is an MLB-best 10-3 in Interleague play.

Pittsburgh starter, Cole, is battling through an injury-plagued season with a record of 5-6.  He has not won since May 20th, standing 0-3 in his last 5 starts with a 3.96 ERA.  Hard-throwing Seattle starter, Paxton, is now pitching his best ball of the year.  He is 2-1 in 4 recent starts and comes off a 2-1 victory vs. Toronto in which he allowed a single tally on just 3 hits in 7 IP.

Based on the above information, it is clear that this is the PERCEPTION/REALITY Underdog of the Day at this huge underdog price.  I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB pick on the Seattle Mariners tonight.
