It's been more than a month since the Angels posted a sweep at home, and they're favored on the MLB odds to end that drought Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

Tigers vs. Angels Game 3

Once again, the Los Angeles Angels scored late to win a ballgame, this time a walk-off jack in the ninth by CJ Cron, and they're now in position to pull off their first home sweep since they end of April when the series against the Detroit Tigers concludes today.

The series finale gets underway in Anaheim at 7:05 PM (ET) with a mound duel between Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer and Matt Shoemaker for the Halos. MLB Odds for the tilt are tight with Shoemaker and LA very slight favorites around -115. An 8 run total is posted at Pinnacle, early signs showing that could move to 7½ despite the two clubs combining for 20 runs Tuesday night.

Both Hurlers Off Impressive Outings
Just a little more than a month removed from his major league debut, the early returns on Fulmer are promising. The 44th overall pick in the 2011 draft out of high school did get knocked around in a couple of road starts, but has really settled down the last two times out in wins over the Rays and A's. Fulmer worked at least seven innings each time, allowing just seven hits and one run combined in the two outings. His first time out facing the Angels will be the sixth road start of his young career.

Shoemaker has also looked pretty strong his last couple of starts after enduring an extremely rough beginning to the campaign. His efforts came against the Orioles and Astros, and both of them on this mound with nearly 16 innings of work and 23 strikeouts while allowing just two runs. The former EMU star has been very tough on the Tigers over the years, Shoemaker pitching to a 0.46 ERA in three starts and the Angels winning each time.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Todd Tichenor has proven to be a good friend to baseball bettors playing the 'under' as he heads into his 12th plate assignment of 2016. Seven of his first 11 failed to make it to the hurdle on the baseball betting boards, one of the games pushing an 8 run total. One of the 'under' winners was an April contest in Anaheim, while one of the few 'overs' was a start by Fulmer in Washington. Home chalk has been a losing proposition when the Nebraska native calls balls and strikes, six of those 10 games cashing for the visitors.

One thing to remember is this is a late-afternoon start in Anaheim (4 PM local time), so it's going to be a little warmer for first pitch than the two previous games but have the same SW breeze (out to right). I'm liking the home team to complete the series sweep for my free MLB Pick.

31th May
Tigers vs. Angels Game 2

By: Willie Bee

It was a perfect day for the AL West with all five teams picking up victories, and close to a perfect evening for Los Angeles Angels hurler Jhoulys Chacin who worked his first complete game in five years to help his squad to a 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Chacin prevailed in what started as a pitchers duel between him and Justin Verlander, losing his shutout bid with two outs in the ninth to hand the Tigers their third consecutive loss. The two sides go right back to work Tuesday evening (10:05 PM ET) with a matchup between struggling pitchers, Anibal Sanchez for Detroit and LA's Hector Santiago. The Angels have been installed as slight favorites on the MLB odds, Pinnacle offering them on a -120 moneyline, an 8½ run total also part of the proceedings.

Santiago Looking To Get Back On Track
No mystery to hitters in 2016, Sanchez is set for his 11th start of the campaign and toting an ERA more than two runs higher than his career mark leading many to speculate something is wrong with him healthwise. A big problem has been control with 27 free passes in nearly 54 innings, and the righthander has also served up 11 homers in that span. Sanchez has made a couple of starts against the Angels in this park in recent years, but dropped them both despite pitching well.

Santiago got off to a decent beginning to the season with a 3.42 ERA and LA winning six of his first eight assignments, but that came to an abrupt end his last two times out. In consecutive starts vs. the Orioles and Rangers, the lefty was chased before the end of the third each time and surrendered 10 runs (9 earned) combined. He owns a nifty 2.43 ERA against the Tigers for his career, but is just 1-4 in seven starts and the same amount of relief appearances.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
This umpire crew, headed up by 20-year vet Bill Miller, has pretty much been working non-stop this season, and Brian Knight will make his 12th appearance behind the plate tonight. The Montana native has called four 'overs' among his last five games to bring his season mark to 7-4 O/U, but his assignment on this diamond earlier this year just fell short of the number. Knight also worked a road start by Sanchez in DC about three weeks ago that skipped past the baseball odds.

It's a very similar forecast to Monday's with clear skies, the thermometer at 70º for first pitch and a light SW breeze (out to right). It's also a repeat for my free MLB pick with another play on the bats.

30th May
Tigers vs. Angels Game 1

By: Willie Bee

A long holiday weekend comes to a close Monday when the unofficial start of summer begins in the USA with the celebration of Memorial Day. The day's baseball betting card includes a matchup between a couple of teams so far not having very memorable seasons as the Detroit Tigers open a 3-game set at the Los Angeles Angels.

The 9:05 PM (ET) contest wraps up action on the day and features a couple of righthanders on the bump with Justin Verlander toiling for the Motown 9 and Jhoulys Chacin representing the home team. Detroit is a slight favorite on the MLB odds board as the moneyline hasn't moved much from its -128 opening. An 8 run total began with a slight lean to the 'over,' but BetOnline is now pricing the 'under' at -120.

Both teams arrive at this point in the season playing sub-.500 baseball. The Tigers fell a game under par after dropping the final two in a series at Oakland over the weekend, pushing them down to fourth in the AL Central but only three games behind front-running and defending MLB champ Kansas City. The Angels also dropped their final two games of a set with the Houston Astros -- their fourth loss in five games to division foes -- to sit just a half-game out of the AL West cellar.

Chacin Set To Face Tigers For 1st Time
Pitching has been the Achilles' Heel for Detroit in 2016, the Tigers ranking 13th in the American League with a 4.47 team ERA, relievers even a little worse at 4.59 (14th). The staff allowed the A's to score 16 runs in the final two games of the weekend set, nine of those charged to the bullpen in Saturday's setback.

Mimicking the team's 24-25 overall record is a 5-5 mark when Verlander pitches, 2-2 when he appears on the road. He has won his last two starts, striking out 10 in each victory over the Twins and Phillies, and allowed just two homers in five May assignments after serving up six in April. Verlander is facing the Angels for just the third time since the start of the 2013 season, splitting those decisions with the loss coming in Anaheim.

Injuries have plagued the Angels so far, but they're hopeful of getting closer Huston Street back this week. The 12-year veteran has been on the shelf since late-April with a strained oblique, and might skip a minor-league rehab to be in the bullpen this evening.

Chacin came over from Atlanta earlier this month, LA winning his first two starts before dropping a 4-1 decision at Texas last Tuesday. Tonight will be his career cherry vs. the Tigers, though he has faced several of their hitters with other teams over the years.

Halos Have Been Rude Hosts To Tigers In Recent Years
This has been a very even series dating back to its origins in 1961 when the Angels first came into existence. Naturally, the Tigers dominated those first few years by beating up on the young Halos to own a 320-308 all-time mark, but LA has evened things up the past few seasons by taking 16 of the last 20, including the last seven games played in Anaheim.

The last two series played on the West Coast have been of the 4-game variety, the Angeles sweeping the long set in 2015 and winning two of the games as home underdogs. Totals split on this diamond a year ago, 'under' bettors cashing winning tickets six of the last nine at the Big A.

There isn't any rain in the forecast for the next few days in Anaheim, and Monday's match should be played under clear skies with temps in the low-70s and a light WSW breeze (out to right-center). My free MLB pick is going to be on the 'over' since I don't trust either Chacin or the Detroit bullpen.
