Mining the Diamond connected on both its selections yesterday and now turns to Friday’s slate of MLB action. Let’s review the pitching matchups, historical trends and MLB odds to sweep again tonight!

Cubs (54-47, -14.0 Units) at Brewers (54-50, +12.0 Units)
  • Milwaukee is 3-5 (-0.8 Units) as a home underdog of +125 to +175 this season.
  • Milwaukee is 17-30 (-2.5 Units) against the Cubs over the last three seasons.
  • Milwaukee is 82-11 (-7.9 Units) against division opponents over the last three seasons.
  • Chicago is 17-7 (+7.1 Units) as a road favorite of -125 to -175 this season.
  • Chicago is 14-7 (+2.2 Units) in July games this season.
  • Chicago is 17-6 (+10.0 Units) against left-handed starters this season.

The Cubs are comin’ like a freight train, particularly when you consider their record after the All-Star break. Chicago is 11-2 since then and acquired a better than solid addition to their pitching staff from their cross-town rivals in Jose Quintana. You have to believe the 28-year-old lefty has been revitalized since being shipped from the desolate baseball wasteland that is the old Comiskey Park, home of the White Sox, and now finds himself in the heat of a pennant race with his new teammates at Wrigley.

Quintana was nothing short of dynamite in his Cubs’ debut where he threw seven innings, allowing just three hits, notching 12 strikeouts, and blanking the Orioles en route to an 8-0 victory. His second outing was not quite as impressive but Q got the job done with six full innings under his belt and surrendered three runs on five hits in Chicago’s 5-3 win over the Cardinals in his last start. Quintana’s team record is 2-0 (+2.1 Units) when starting against the Brewers with an ERA of 0.60 and a WHIP of 0.733. Chicago has fared well against Milwaukee at Miller Park over the past three seasons, winning 14 of 22 games over the past three seasons. Watch that steak continue as we back the Cubbies again (nothin’ sweeter than a repeater) in our MLB picks tonight.

Indians (55-45, +18.6 Units) at White Sox (39-60, -8.3 Units)
  • Chicago’s starter Derek Holland is 7-1 when starting against the Indians with an ERA of 2.27 and a WHIP of 1.17.
  • Cleveland is 30-27 (-17.0 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • Cleveland is 33-32 (-18.2 Units) in night games this season.
  • Cleveland is 1-5 (-8.8 Units) as a road favorite of -175 or more this season.

The Indians are rolling and the White Sox are stumbling. This we know and so too do the MLB odds makers who are offering the Indians as high as -240 to attract all the squares who lay the lumber because that’s just what squares do – over and over and over again.

But we are all about value and although this looks like a mismatch, consider that the Indians are just 5-4 (-3.2 Units) against the White Sox this season and Chicago’s starter Derek Holland has a stellar 7-1 mark against the Tribe. Let’s grab the heavy juice and watch the squares bite their fingernails as we cash with this big home dog.
