The numbers told the tale as Mining the Diamond went 2-0 Tuesday, and today we lock on to the top two choices on the board in our MLB picks for Wednesday, April 19.

Tigers (8-5, +3.8 units) At Rays (7-8, -0.8 units)
  • Tampa Bay is 2-4 (-2.0 units) after a win this season.
  • Tampa Bay is 56-72 (-20.0 Units) against right-handed starters over the last two seasons.
  • Tampa Bay is 37-63 (-26.0 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record over the last two seasons.
  • Tampa Bay’s starter Chris Archer is 2-9 (-9.2 Units) when playing on Wednesday over the last three seasons. (Team's Record)
  • Detroit is 94-80 (+14.9 Units) in all games over the last two seasons.
  • Detroit is +9.6 units as a road underdog of +125 to +175 the last three seasons.
  • Detroit is 36-23 (+13.3 units) in April games over the past three seasons.

Jordan Zimmermann (1-1, 5.05 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) will be toeing the slab for the visiting Tigers, and he’s not exactly chopped liver. The former Washington Senator is a two-time All-Star and owner of a no-hitter. At the age of 30, he may not have fulfilled his lofty expectations but he is nonetheless a force on the mound when he’s on. He has had two disparate starts this season with a six-inning gem against the Red Sox in which he allowed one run on four hits in a 4-1 victory but then got roughed up by the Twins in his last outing when Minnesota hit him for five runs in four-plus innings of work en route to an 11-5 defeat. He will be opposed by Chris Archer (2-0, 2.21 ERA, 1.18 ERA), the ace of the Rays’ staff, but Zimmermann has a tendency to rise to the level of his counter number. We believe he will do that again as the Tigers' big bats come alive.

Rockies (10-5, +6.0 units) At Dodgers (7-8, -5.4 units)
  • Los Angeles is 71-64 (-18.8 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • Los Angeles is 24-33 (-18.6 Units) against left-handed starters over the last two seasons.
  • Los Angeles is 2-6 (-6.6 units) against left-handed starters this season.
  • Los Angeles is 4-7 (-6.4 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season
  • Colorado is 7-2 (+6.2 units) in road games.
  • Colorado is 5-0 against left-handed starters.
  • Colorado is 7-4 (+4.2 units) against division opponents.

The MLB odds makers are tempting us once again with a team sporting a winning record against an opponent owning a sub-.500 mark. Tuesday night, we made the books pay when we included the Red Sox +160 in our MLB picks and we feel similar today with a streaking Colorado squad that upended the Dodgers last night by the score of 4-3. Yes, the Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is in the starter’s box, but he was tagged for four runs on eight hits in six innings of work by the Rockies last week in a 4-2 loss as a -200 favorite. Let’s back the big dog here and hope Rockies starter Tyler Anderson, who is 2-1 with a 3.28 ERA against Big Blue in his career, can limit LA’s offense enough to get his team the win.
