Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column that focuses on historical trends, pitching matchups and the value brought by the odds on a particular side or total. Let's see what the top selections on Sunday's baseball slate of games holds for us.

Rangers (76-78) at Athletics (71-83)

The A's are 7-1 (+6.1 Units) on the season against the Texas Rangers and today they will improve to 8-1. Texas has seven consecutive losses at Oakland this year and are looking at a second straight sweep at the Coliseum this season. The Athletics send Jharel Cotton to the hill who last faced the Texans on August 27th and hurled six impressive innings, allowed just one earned run on two hits and contributed mightily to Oakland's 8-3 victory. Cotton missed his last scheduled start with a groin injury but has registered wins in three of his last five starts. The groin injury apparently has been something Cotton has dealt with over the past few months but this reprieve should see him in fine form to continue Oakland's domination over the Rangers this season. Back the A's in your MLB picks this afternoon!

Indians (97-58) at Mariners (75-80)

The Tribe goes for a series win today and there's no better guy they would rather see on the mound than their ace and Cy Young Award favorite Corey Kluber. To say that Kluber has pitched well would be like saying the Mona Lisa is a pretty good painting. The Indians hold an enormous advantage every time Kluber and his 17-4 record take the hill. Yet recently, Kluber has taken it to another level with a 3-0 mark and a stunning 0.78 ERA and an equally outrageous 0.52 WHIP over his last three appearances. The 31 year-old right-hander is 2-1 when starting against the Mariners over his career with an ERA of 1.96 and a WHIP of 0.91.

Cleveland trounced their hosts last night by the score of 11-4 as the AL Central leaders have played remarkably well over the second half of the season, breaking a long held MLB streak for most consecutive wins in a season with 22 straight. And if the specter of Kluber staring the Mariners lineup down isn't enough to convince you to bet Cleveland then consider Edwin Encarnacion and center fielder Jason Kipnis, both getting a day off on Saturday, returning to the lineup today. The MLB odds are too steep on the money line so we suggest a wager on the run line as the Indians are expected to cruise today much like they did yesterday.
