Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column that scours the baseball slate in search of the optimum pitching matchups, historical trends and the best bang for our gambling buck. Let’s see what Wednesday’s card holds in store for us.

Red Sox (49-35, +3.7 Units) at Rangers (40-44, +0.1 Units)
  • Texas is 4-9 (-5.4 Units) when playing on Wednesday this season.

  • Texas is 25-35 (-9.6 Units) in night games this season.

  • Texas is 22-32 (-9.6 Units) in July games this season.

  • Boston is 4-0 (+4.0 Units) in July games this season.

  • Boston is 40-27 (+5.1 Units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Boston is 5-0 (+5.0 Units) against the Rangers this season.

The Red Sox are as hot as a July evening at Fenway and although the venue tonight is Global Life Park in Arlington, we see no reason why Boston will not remain on fire as the teams wrap this three-game set. The BoSox have outscored the Rangers 18-9 in the first two games and Boston’s Andrew Benintendi was a one-man wrecking crew last night with a 5-for-5 performance including two home runs and six RBI on the evening in the club’s 11-4 victory. The Sox have the longest active winning streak in the majors with six consecutive victories and have won eight of their last nine. Let’s back the streaking Sox in our MLB picks for Wednesday night.

Padres (35-48, -3.4 Units) at Indians (44-38, -16.9 Units)
  • Cleveland is 18-22 (-21.3 Units) in home games this season.

  • Cleveland is 2-6 (-10.4 Units) as a home favorite of -175 to -250 this season.

  • Cleveland is 2-10 (-13.2 Units) in inter-league games this season.

  • San Diego is 8-5 (+6.5 Units) when playing on Wednesday this season.

  • San Diego is 18-17 (+7.0 Units) on the road when the total is 9 to 9.5 over the last three seasons.

  • San Diego is 27-26 (+10.3 Units) in July games over the last three seasons.

The MLB odds on the Padres are simply too good for us to pass up. San Diego has won their last two, including last night’s 1-0 nail biter over the Indians in the first of three at Progressive Field. San Diego starter Luis Perdomo is 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA over his last three while Cleveland’s starter Trevor Bauer has virtually identical numbers over his last three appearances (2-1, 3.15 EA) but his history against the Padres reveals he is 0-2 with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 1.71 in his two meetings against San Diego. If the oddsmakers want to give us all this juice on the Padres, who are we to refuse?
