We did the splits yesterday but suffered no loss of units due to an underdog failing to cash. Today Mining the Diamond is back on the hunt for more winners in our MLB picks on Friday’s slate of games.

Diamondbacks (24-18, +6.9 units) vs. Padres (15-28, -10.6 units)
  • San Diego is 10-20 (-8.9 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • San Diego is 8-14 (-5.4 units) when playing against a winning team this season.

  • San Diego is 10-17 (-5.0 units) after a loss this season.

  • San Diego is 4-12 (-9.0 units) in May games this season.

  • Arizona is 19-13 (+5.5 units) in night games this season.

  • Arizona is 17-11 (+6.2 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Arizona is 98-69 (+23.5 units) against teams with a losing record over the last three seasons.

The MLB odds favor the visitors here and rightfully so. Arizona departed the desert last night after a three-game sweep of the Mets and now travels to San Diego to meet a Padres team that has dropped five of its last six. San Diego is averaging just three runs per contest at home, has a bullpen with an ERA of 5.37 at home and a starting pitcher in Jered Weaver who is 0-4 with a 6.05 ERA.

Conversely, the Diamondbacks are averaging 5.1 runs per game against right-handed starters (Weaver) and have a starter in Taijuan Walker who is 2-1 when starting against the Padres with an ERA of 1.80 and a WHIP of 0.500. In summary, we have the better team with the better lineup with the better starting pitcher. Lay the price with this road chalk tonight in your MLB picks.

Indians (20-19, -9.7 units) vs. Astros (29-12, +13.6 units)
  • Houston is 54-44 (-9.8 units) as a home favorite of -125 to -175 over the last three seasons.

  • Houston is 7-10 (-2.3 units) vs. Cleveland over the last three seasons.

  • Houston’s starter Charlie Morton is 0-1 when starting against the Indians with an ERA of 4.50 and a WHIP of 1.167.

  • Cleveland is 6-3 (+2.6 units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

  • Cleveland is 49-32 (+14.2 units) on the road when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last three seasons.

  • Cleveland’s starter Trevor Bauer is BAUER is 6-0 (+6.2 units) when starting against the Astros with an ERA of 2.61 and a WHIP of 1.079 throughout his career.

This is a bit of a contrarian play for Mining the Diamond as the red-hot Astros would seem to be the logical choice over a Cleveland team that has dropped their last two. I get that, but the Tribe’s Trevor Bauer is a perfect 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his career when facing the Astros. The Cleveland bullpen has been terrific as well with a 1.90 ERA this season and will hold down the fort if Bauer gets in trouble. The oddsmakers are giving us enough reason to back the road dogs here and we will watch them cash against a Houston team that will get plenty of square play tonight.
