Last night looked like a sweep until the Pirates came back to edge the Brewers but we did cruise to an easy win with the Cardinals over the Mets. Let’s get back at it and review the MLB odds for today’s slate and cash a pair of tickets.

Diamondbacks (54-39, +11.9 Units) at Reds (39-54, -6.6 Units)
  • Cincinnati is 6-14 (-6.0 Units) after three or more consecutive losses this season.
  • Cincinnati is 18-27 (-4.5 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record.
  • Cincinnati is as a home underdog of +125 to +175 this season.
  • Arizona is 39-25 (+11.6 Units) in night games this season.
  • Arizona is 44-27 (+14.5 Units) against right-handed starters this season.
  • Arizona is 34-19 (+13.5 Units) after a win this season.

If you backed the Diamondbacks in your MLB picks last night you are undoubtedly a happy camper this morning. The Snakes pummeled the Reds 11-2 and more of the same is in the offing today. The Reds have averaged just 2.8 runs per contest over their five-game losing streak and it appears as though the D-Backs have awoken from their five-game slumber, courtesy of a trip to the Queen City.

Zack Greinke is on the hill today for Arizona and the Diamondback’s ace was seamless in his last performance in which he coasted through seven innings of shutout ball against these same Cincinnati Reds. That July 7th affair resulted in a 6-3 Arizona victory and Greinke’s 8-2 record with an ERA of 2.41 and a WHIP of 0.92 when starting against the Reds bodes well for his chances today. The MLB odds may appear a bit steep considering Arizona’s sub .500 mark on the road this season but our power ratings reflect a price north of -200 on the Diamondbacks in this particular matchup. Let’s lay the lumber and like it!

 Tigers (43-49, -8.0 Units) at Royals (45-47, +3.5 Units)
  • Kansas City is 13-23 (-9.4 Units) against division opponents this season.
  • Kansas City is 15-20 (-3.4 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • Kansas City’s starting pitcher Jason Hammel’s team record is 2-5 when starting against the Tigers with an ERA of 8.50 and a WHIP of 2.16.
  • Detroit is 24-16 (+11.5 Units) in July games over the last two seasons.
  • Detroit is 22-16 (+6.0 Units) against division opponents this season.
  • Detroit’s starting pitcher Justin Verlander is 23-10 when starting against the Royals with an ERA of 3.19 and a WHIP of 1.15.

Here we have one team on a heater while the other is on a significant cooler. The visiting Tigers have won their last four and five of their last six while the Royals have dropped seven of their last eight. In addition, Kansas City has lost four of five to Detroit this season, including the first two of this four-game set by a combined score of 19-5.

Never again will we see Justin Verlander in his prime, circa 2011, but he is still an intimidating force on the mound and has had tremendous success against the Royals over his career, as evidenced by his 23-10 mark and 3.19 ERA. Conversely, KC’s starter Jason Hammel brings a 0-2 mark with a 6.35 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over his last three appearances into this game as well as a 2-5 (-3.3 Units) mark when starting against the Tigers with a dismal ERA of 8.50 and a WHIP of 2.16. We’ve got a mismatch on our hands and we will take full advantage at a bargain price.
