Mining the Diamond: Snakes & Sox Thrive on the Road in Thursday’s MLB Picks

Mining The Diamond Red Sox

Thursday, June 1, 2017 3:01 PM GMT

Thursday night the gettin’ is good and Mining the Diamond has two premier plays in our MLB picks. Below we analyze these twin killings on pitching matchups, historical trends and of course, the odds. Let’s cash these tickets!

Diamondbacks (32-22, +11.4 units) vs. Marlins (21-30, -9.4 units)
  • Miami is 11-15 (-5.6 units) in home games this season.

  • Miami is 13-23 (-11.0 units) in night games this season.

  • Miami is 17-25 (-9.6 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Arizona is 20-12 (+7.7 units) after a win this season.

  • Arizona is 26-13 (+12.6 units) in night games this season.

  • Arizona’s starter Zack Greinke’s team record is 7-0 (+7.0 units) against Miami over his career.

Although I am not prone to laying the lumber on the road, there are exceptions to every rule and this just happens to be one because the lumber in question is not nearly as heavy as I thought it was going to be which is why we have a value play here. Arizona’s Zack Greinke has been perfect against the Marlins throughout his career with a 7-0 team mark and a 3.09 ERA. Conversely, his counter number in this matchup Jeff Locke is 1-2 when starting against the Diamondbacks with an ERA of 7.25 and a WHIP of 1.83. The Snakes have won their last two and should be poised to snap the Marlins’ four-game winning streak as these teams clash tonight in Miami. Back Arizona in your MLB picks on Thursday night.

Red Sox (29-23, +-0.2 units) vs. Orioles (27-24, +1.7 units)
  • Baltimore is 51-55 (-8.5 units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 over the last three seasons.

  • Baltimore’s starter Wade Miley is 0-1 with a 0-1 record when starting against the Red Sox with an ERA of 40.60 and a WHIP of 6.767.

  • Boston is 10-7 (+0.6 units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

  • Boston is 16-12 (+1.6 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

  • Boston has won eight of their last 10 games.

To be clear, this is both a fade of Baltimore’s Wade Miley against his old team and an endorsement of a hot club over a struggling club. The MLB odds makers appear to agree with me as the O’s have an excellent home record (17-8, +7.7 units) versus the Red Sox who are a mere 12-13 on the highway. Nevertheless, Boston has been winning lately (8-2 over their last 10) while Baltimore has been floundering (2-8 over their last 10).

In addition, the Sox have Eduardo Rodriguez on the hill who has bounced back splendidly this season from an injury-plagued 2016 campaign. E-Rod blanked the Mariners in a 3-0 victory in his last outing and is 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP this season. The 24-year-old southpaw has allowed only 11 earned runs over his last 44 innings pitched and has averaged 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Let’s bet the better team with the better starting pitcher to win the day.
