Mining the Diamond: Snakes and Tigers on the Loose in Our MLB Picks

Minning The Diamond

Saturday, June 3, 2017 3:57 PM GMT

Mining the Diamond cashed in convincing fashion with the Nationals yesterday but experienced a hiccup with a disappointing Rockies defeat. Let's bounce back from that split with a pair of winners in our MLB picks on Saturday.

Diamondbacks (34-23, +11.4 units) vs. Marlins (22-31, -9.4 units)

* Miami is 74-96 (-30.7 Units) against right-handed starters over the last two seasons.

* Miami is 8-13 (-5.4 units) after a win this season.

* Miami is 6-12 (-5.4 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

* Arizona is 25-15 (+10.0 units) against right-handed starters this season.

* Arizona is 20-11 (+7.3 units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.

* Arizona's starter Randall Delgado's team record is 4-0 (+4.4 units) when starting against the Marlins with an ERA of 1.54 and a WHIP of 1.029.

We have a more than a few reasons to back the Diamondbacks in our MLB picks today. First and foremost, Arizona's starter Randall Delgado has had nothing but success when facing the Marlins over his career with a perfect 4-0 team record. In addition, the converted reliever has pitched well in his two starts this season posting a 1.86 ERA, while his previous outings have come in relief. Next, Arizona will enjoy contributions from well-rested shortstop Nick Ahmed who took last night off in the D-Backs 7-5 setback but has been on fire recently. Ahmed is hitting .435 over his last six games and .349 since May 6th which lands him among the top 10 National League hitters during that time frame.

Finally, Arizona's lefty-stacked lineup should feast on Miami's starter Edinson Volquez who has struggled against left-handed hitters as evidenced by the .300 average and .909 OPS against him. Volquez is 1-7 this season and that record won't improve after the Snakes begin to bite early and often in today's third game of a four-game set.

White Sox (24-29, +1.3 units) vs. Tigers (26-28, -2.6 units)

* Detroit is 93-82 (+9.8 units) against division opponents over the last three seasons.

* Detroit is 75-65 (+9.1 units) in day games over the last three seasons.

* Detroit's starter Jordan Zimmermann's team record is 5-2 (+2.6 units) when starting against the White Sox over his career.

* Detroit is 16-7 (+7.6 Units) against the White Sox over the last three seasons.

* Chicago is 9-16 (-6.6 units) after a win this season.

* Chicago is 18-23 (-4.4 units) against right-handed starters this season.

* Chicago is 11-14 (-3.0 units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.

The MLB odds makers have installed the Tigers as home favorites in this matchup and with good reason. The Tigers have dominated the White Sox in Detroit over the last three seasons (16-7, +7.6 units) and that trend reared its head in spectacular fashion last night with the Tigers' 15-5 pummeling of the Pale Hose in the first of this three-game series.

The huge question mark is Detroit's starter Jordan Zimmermann who has been assaulted lately without the use of his slider. Zimmermann has relied almost exclusively on his fastball and hitters are simply timing it as he serves it up across the plate. However, Zimmermann has oodles of talent and will get his redemption from his last start when the White Sox hammered him on Wednesday in Chicago to the tune of seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Even if Zimmermann does not post an impressive start I know that the White Sox have right-hander Miguel Gonzalez and his 6.99 ERA going for them. Gonzalez has gotten waxed by the Tigers over his career and his 7.02 ERA against Detroit bears that out.

Detroit has won three of their last four while Chicago has dropped their last three. I am siding with the hot team, fading the cold team, and knowing that even a middling performance from Jordan Zimmermann will get us a winner here.
