Mining the Diamond did the splits Tuesday but we are back at it today, reviewing the MLB odds, pitching matchups and historical trends to deliver two premium plays for Wednesday’s baseball betting action.

Braves (53-64, +0.2 Units) at Rockies (66-53, +13.3 Units)
  • Colorado is 29-23 (+7.0 Units) after a loss this season.
  • Colorado is 36-22 (+10.1 Units) in home games this season.
  • Colorado is 18-9 (+6.8 Units) at home when the total is 11 to 11.5 this season.
  • Atlanta is 43-54 (-3.7 Units) against right-handed starters this season.
  • Atlanta is 1-9 (-7.6 Units) in games played in Colorado over the past three seasons.
  • Atlanta’s starter Mike Foltynewicz’s team record is 0-3 (-3.2 Units) when starting against the Rockies with an ERA of 3.06 and a WHIP of 1.19.

The Braves did us a favor by edging the Rockies on Tuesday by the score of 4-3 because Colorado will undoubtedly be up to avenge its first loss in the last 10 meetings with Atlanta at Coors Field. Jon Gray will be hurling for the Rox, and he is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.64 and a WHIP of 1.07 in two career starts against Atlanta. Colorado is not only 9-1 in its last 10 meetings in the Mile High City against Atlanta but is 13-3 in all games against the Braves over the last three seasons.

Mike Foltynewicz of Atlanta has been getting whacked around recently, allowing six runs and seven hits before being chased by the Cardinals after just two-plus innings in his last outing. Certainly the thin air of Colorado will not bode well for the struggling starter, and we see a big victory by the Rockies in this one, which is why we have little trepidation about including the Rockies in our MLB picks on the run line vs. the relatively pricey money line.

Tigers (53-66, -13.1 Units) at Rangers (58-60, +0.2 Units)
  • Texas is 44-25 (+19.0 Units) in August games over the last three seasons.
  • Texas is 112-91 (+23.2 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • Texas is 86-66 (+19.6 Units) after a win over the last two seasons.
  • Detroit is 23-33 (-12.2 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • Detroit is 31-48 (-16.6 Units) in night games this season.
  • Detroit is 24-38 (-9.6 Units) in road games this season.

The Rangers have an outside shot at making a postseason appearance and their chances keep improving after each victory. Texas has now won five of its last six, while the toothless Tigers have done just the opposite and dropped five of their last six, including Tuesday's 10-4 setback. The Rangers will be looking for a sweep, and we say they will get it.

This is not only a tale of two teams going in opposite directions but a tale of two starting pitchers doing the same. Cole Hamels has dazzled in his last two starts with consecutive gems against Minnesota and Houston in which he pitched a combined 16 innings and allowed only one run. Conversely, the Tigers' Anibel Sanchez has a 1-2 record with an 8.62 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP over his last three appearances and is 2-4 when starting against the Rangers career with an ERA of 8.48 and a WHIP of 1.85. Sanchez’s team record is 5-17 (-12.0 Units) after a loss over the last few seasons, while Hamels boasts the following stats headed into this one:

  • Hamels’ team record is 32-15 (+15.7 Units) in all games over the last two seasons.
  • Hamels’ team record is 28-11 (+14.7 Units) in home games over the last three seasons.
  • Hamels’ team record is 26-10 (+15.1 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • Hamels’ team record is 18-6 (+11.6 Units) after a win over the last two seasons.
  • Hamels’ team record is 19-5 (+13.5 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record over the last two seasons.

Although the MLB odds are high on the Rangers, our power rating has them at -217, thereby giving us value even at this lofty price.
