Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column focusing on pitching matchups, historical trends and the value rendered by the odds on each game on the slate. We pare this down to our two top selections each day. Let’s see what Wednesday has to offer.

Padres (50-62, +1.7 Units) at Reds (46-67, -13.8 Units)
  • Cincinnati is 6-21 (-15.0 Units) against left-handed starters this season.
  • Cincinnati is 23-32 (-7.1 Units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • Cincinnati is 26-39 (-8.2 Units) after a loss this season.
  • San Diego is 31-26 (+10.5 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • San Diego is 31-26 (+10.5 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • San Diego is 10-7 (+6.7 Units) when playing on Wednesdays this season.

The Padres are 4-1 (+3.3 Units) against the Reds this season after a 7-3 victory last night. They are also trotting Travis Wood to the mound who, despite a 3-5 mark against Cincinnati, boasts a 2.69 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in his 11 career starts against the Reds. Wood has made two starts since being dealt from Kansas City last month in which he allowed two runs and two hits over six innings in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh followed by a 10-6 loss in his last start to the same Pittsburgh Pirates, in which he allowed four runs and six hits over five innings of work.

On the flipside, the Reds will send rookie Asher Wojciechowski to the hill who has bounced around from Triple-A to the bullpen and into the Reds’ starting rotation. His last three starts have rendered a 7.30 ERA, although his last appearance was five innings of one run ball against the Cardinals last week. What leaps to the forefront is that the MLB odds are reflecting a rather heavy lean towards a woeful Cincinnati crew in a game that looks it should be slightly skewed in favor of San Diego. We are all for value so let’s grab the road pup here and include the Padres in our MLB picks tonight.

Yankees (59-52, -7.2 Units) at Blue Jays (53-59, -16.1 Units)
  • Toronto is 21-32 (-16.7 Units) after a win this season.
  • Toronto is 30-40 (-17.7 Units) in night games this season.
  • Toronto is 18-27 (-12.9 Units) against division opponents this season.
  • New York is 22-14 (+3.3 Units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • New York is 26-19 (+6.9 Units) against division opponents this season.
  • New York’s starter Masahiro Tanaka’s team record is 17-4 (+10.5 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record over the last two seasons.

Although the lumber on this matchup may be a bit difficult to lay on a road dog that lost 4-2 last night to the team they will be playing tonight, our power ratings have the Yankees as -209 favorites in this one. Masahiro Tanaka’s team record against the Blue Jays is 9-3 (+5.3 Units) when starting against the Jays with an ERA of 2.52 and a WHIP of 1.05.

We love the pitching mismatch here as Toronto sends Nick Tepesch to the hill. The 28-year-old lightly traveled journeyman Tepesch (0-1, 5.40 ERA) has made just one start this season in which he allowed seven runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of work for his previous club, the Minnesota Twins, against the Red Sox back on May 6th.  Let’s go with the experienced veteran who should cruise against the Triple-A caliber Tepesch.
