It’s the start of a new week and Mining the Diamond has two premium selections to jump start your bankroll. Let’s review the historical trends, pitching matchups as well as the MLB odds and cash those tickets!

Rockies (41-24, +21.0 units) vs. Pirates (28-35, -7.0 units)
  • Pittsburgh is 1-7 (-6.6 units) when playing on Mondays this season.

  • Pittsburgh is 13-27 (-16.0 units) in night games this season.

  • Pittsburgh is 12-19 (-8.9 units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

  • Colorado is 11-3 (+8.8 units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

  • Colorado is 24-11 (+16.2 units) in road games this season.

  • Colorado is 8-2 (+7.1 units) in June games this season.

Riddle me this. Why are the Rockies, a team that is 17 games above .500, having won seven of their last eight and leading the NL West, underdogs to a sub .500 team that is 16-15 (-1.3 units) at home? I don’t have an answer either other than the fact that Pittsburgh’s starting pitcher James Taillon is….coming off the DL (illness) after five weeks and got throttled in his last effort which occurred on May 3rd when he allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings of a 7-2 loss to the Reds. That’s certainly not the reason either so unless the MLB odds makers have a crystal ball that shows Colorado’s starter Kyle Freeland is poised for a meltdown after limiting the Indians to one run in his last start, culminating in a 6-1 Rockies’ win, then I’ve got no answer for you. Grab the juice and back the Rox in your MLB picks on Monday night.

 Yankees (37-23, +11.6 units) vs. Angels (33-33, +0.7 units)
  • Los Angeles is 23-27 (-3.2 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Los Angeles is 22-25 (-3.3 units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

  • Los Angeles is 3-10 (-7.3 units) versus Yankees over the last three seasons.

  • New York is 22-13 (+7.3 units) after a win this season.

  • New York is 11-4 (+6.2 units) after three or more consecutive wins this season.

  • New York is 28-16 (+10.5 units) against right-handed starters this season.

The caveat to backing the Yankees rests squarely with their starter Masahiro Tanaka. After spinning a gem against Oakland in which he surrendered just one run on five hits through seven plus innings in a 4-1 victory, Tanaka has been roughed up in his last two starts in which he has allowed a combined 12 runs against Baltimore and Boston. However, Tanaka has had great success when pitching against the Angels as evidenced by his team’s 3-0 record and an ERA of 1.71 with a WHIP of 1.04.

The Angels will trot out Alex Meyer (2-3, 4.08 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) who has never faced the Bombers during his career but should get an unpleasant wake-up call from the team that has been absolutely bashing the ball lately, averaging a whopping 11 runs per game over their five-game winning streak. Expect more of the same tonight.
