Mining the Diamond has cashed six of its last eight selections as we peruse the pitching matchups, historical trends and MLB odds for Monday night’s MLB action.

Nationals (42-27, +1.6 units) vs. Marlins (30-37, -6.2 units)
  • Miami is 35-44 (-18.8 Units) in home games in night games over the last two seasons.

  • Miami is 81-101 (-27.6 Units) against right-handed starters over the last two seasons.

  • Miami is 1-6 (-5.4 units) when playing on Monday this season.

  • Washington is 29-10 (+15.5 Units) in night games this season.

  • Washington is 13-7 (+6.5 units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

  • Washington is 24-13 (+8.3 units) in road games this season.

The Nats took three of four from the Mets over the weekend, while the Marlins dropped two of three in Atlanta which put even more distance between the NL East leaders and the three-team logjam for second place in the division. Washington now has a 10 ½ game lead but should feast on Miami’s starter Justin Nicolino who is 0-3 when starting against the Nationals with an ERA of 8.62. The 25-year-old southpaw is coming off the DL to get his first start since May 30th when he left after three innings with a bruised left index finger in a 7-2 win over Philadelphia.

Conversely, Washington’s starter Tanner Roarke has a 2-1 mark with a flashy 1.92 ERA in his last three starts against Miami. The price is most definitely right on the Nats so include them in your MLB picks for Monday night.

Blue Jays (33-35, --9.0 units) vs. Rangers (34-34, +2.1 units)
  • Texas is 15-18 (-0.6 units) after a loss this season.

  • Texas is 3-7 (-4.2 units) versus Toronto over the last three seasons.

  • Texas is 2-5 (-3.6 units) when playing on Monday this season.

  • Toronto is 40-29 (+3.6 units) in June games over the last three seasons.

  • Toronto’s starter Marco Estrada is 4-1 when starting against the Rangers with an ERA of 2.02 and a WHIP of 0.828.

  • Toronto is 16-8 (+3.1 Units) against the Rangers over the last three seasons.

Texas will hand the ball to 32-year-old rookie Austin Bibens-Dirkx who has pitched well as a starter but had a rough outing when he was tagged for three runs in four innings of relief against the Blue Jays earlier this season. His counter number tonight, Marco Estrada, has had his difficulties recently but a start against the Rangers will shake him from his funk. Estrada is 4-1 with a 2.02 ERA against the Rangers and is too good to go much longer being this bad. Toronto has taken two of three from Texas this season and will do so again tonight. The MLB odds make the visitors too tempting to pass up!
