Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column designed to deliver two premium plays each day. We base our selections on historical trends, pitching matchups, and the MLB odds. Let’s cash a pair of winners on Friday’s card!

Rockies (34-22, +14.0 units) vs. Padres (22-33, -5.0 units)
  • San Diego is 15-23 (-4.5 units) in night games this season.

  • San Diego is 11-18 (-5.0 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

  • San Diego is 17-24 (-2.2 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Colorado is 16-7 (+9.8 units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

  • Colorado is 19-9 (+12.2 units) in road games this season.

  • Colorado is 18-10 (+10.2 units) against division opponents this season.

The Rockies snapped a three-game losing streak in Seattle last night while the Padres are in the midst of a surprising four-game winning streak. But the good times for the good Fathers will come to a halt after tonight as the Rockies have the advantage in virtually all aspects of the game including starting pitching. Tonight German Marquez will continue his ascension as one of Colorado’s top pitchers, registering wins in his last four appearances and a sizzling 1.48 ERA in those starts.

Conversely, the Padres’ Clayton Richard is 1-2 in his last three starts with a 4.29 ERA and owns a 2-3 mark with a 4.68 ERA this season at home. The Rockies have won the last two meetings with San Diego and outscored them by a 14-5 margin. The trends, pitching matchups, and odds are saying all-systems-go on Colorado tonight in our MLB picks.

Nationals (33-19, +5.4 units) vs. Athletics (23-30, -5.2 units)
  • Oakland is 16-23 (-6.2 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Oakland is 14-20 (-3.8 units) in night games this season.

  • Oakland is 84-131 (42.2 units) after a loss over the last three seasons.

  • Washington is 5-1 (+3.6 units) when playing with a day off this season.

  • Washington is 22-8 (+12.2 units) in night games this season.

  • Washington is 17-10 (+4.2 units) in road games this season.

The Nats have won five of their last six and should be well rested coming into tonight’s game with the Twins. Stephen Strasburg dazzled in his last start, shutting out the Padres and allowing just three hits through seven full innings of work. Washington has won Strasburg’s last five starts and the 28-year-old veteran has a 2.86 ERA over that span. On the flip side, Minnesota’s Andrew Triggs has a 0-2 mark over his last three appearances and a 4.09 home ERA.

The Nationals are poised to cash here and Strasburg is a perfect 4-0 on the road. The Twins are struggling, having lost five of their last six which means we have the hotter team, the better team, and the superior starting pitcher all working for us as we wager on Washington to get the job done on Friday night!
