Mining the Diamond is a daily column that scrutinizes pitching matchups, historical trends and the accompanying odds in order to produce two MLB picks each day. Let's look at Sunday's slate and cash a pair of tickets.

Reds (19-17, +5.4 units) vs. Giants (14-24, -12.0 units)

* San Francisco is 8-37 (-18.6 Units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last two seasons.

* San Francisco is 6-15 (-12.2 Units) against right-handed starters this season.

* San Francisco is 2-11 (-11.0 Units) after a win this season.

* San Francisco's starter Jeff Samardzija's teams' record is 2-9 (-11.1 Units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last two seasons.

* San Francisco is 1-5 (-5.2 units) when playing on a Sunday this season.

* Cincinnati is 4-2 (+2.1 units) versus San Francisco this season.

* Cincinnati is 5-2 (+6.0 units) as a road underdog of +125 to +175 this season.

* Cincinnati is 4-1 (+4.8 units) when playing on Sunday this season.

The Giants' starter Jeff Samardzija's team record is 3-8 (-4.6 units) with an ERA of 3.65 and a WHIP of 1.362 when starting against the Reds over the course of his career. The 32-year-old veteran is also winless this season and owns a dismal 5.44 ERA for his efforts in 2017. In his last outing, he goes torched by the Mets for six runs on 10 hits in what resulted in a 6-1 loss. On the flipside, we have Cincinnati's starter Tim Adelman who has notched a pair of wins in his last two starts with an offense behind him that has plated 55 more runs than the 29th ranked offense of San Francisco. This looks like a perfect spot to include a live dog in your MLB picks.

Pirates (15-22, -5.6 units) vs. Diamondbacks (21-17, +5.4 units)

* Arizona is 43-59 (-9.8 units) in day games over the last three seasons.

* Arizona is 37-46 (-10.2 units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 over the last three seasons.

* Arizona's starter Robbie Ray's team record is 0-3 with an ERA of 7.07 and a WHIP of 1.929 in his three career starts against the Pirates.

* Pittsburgh is 111-79 (+22.2 units) after a win over the last three seasons.

* Pittsburgh is 33-24 (+7.7 units) when playing on Sunday over the last three seasons.

* Pittsburgh is 11-4 (+6.4 units) versus Arizona over the last three seasons.

The Bucs claimed a 4-3 win over the D-Backs last night and the oddsmakers have once again made them a road dog this afternoon. We will gladly take the vig instead of paying it as Pittsburgh stacks up well against Arizona and the Diamondbacks' pitcher Robbie Rays has been completely ineffective in his starts against the Pirates, dropping all three contests and now sports a bloated 7.07 ERA in those outings. Pittsburgh's Ivan Nova has just one start against the Diamondbacks and that proved to be a winning one when he came away with a 4-2 victory in his only stint against them. They say there's nothin' sweeter than a repeater and we'll watch the Pirates replicate their winning ways from last night and cash at a nice price.
