Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column where we analyze pitching matchups, historical trends, and the odds. Let's discuss our top plays on Saturday's slate.

Cardinals (81-72, -3.0 Units) at Pirates (69-85, -14.4 Units)

* Pittsburgh is 34-50 (-16.6 Units) after a loss this season.

* Pittsburgh is 43-63 (-22.4 Units) in night games this season.

* Pittsburgh is 17-31 (-17.3 Units) in September games over the last two seasons.

* St. Louis is 87-73 (+16.2 Units) in road games over the last two seasons.

* St. Louis is 39-27 (+12.8 Units) on the road when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last two seasons.

* St. Louis is 31-22 (+8.8 Units) in road games in night games this season.

This is a nice spot for the St. Louis Cardinals after winning the opener of this three-game set 4-3 last night. The Redbirds have won four straight while the Pirates have been mired in a hellacious slump, losing eight of their last nine and have now dropped their last four to the Cardinals dating back to St. Louis's three-game sweep of the Bucs earlier this month.

The pitching matchup also favors the Cards with Lance Lynn on the hill, who is 11-7 on the season with a 3.09 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP versus Gerrit Cole who owns an 11-11 mark with a 4.13 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Our power ratings have St. Louis as -157 favorites here so the MLB odds we are getting on the slightly favored Cardinals makes this a great value pick on our betting board today.

Nationals (92-61, +6.5 Units) at Mets (66-87, -29.4 Units)

* New York is 34-41 (-17.7 Units) in home games this season.

* New York is 13-18 (-11.7 Units) in home games against division opponents this season.

* New York is 14-43 (-29.0 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

* Washington is 47-29 (+14.3 Units) in road games this season.

* Washington is 66-33 (+22.1 Units) in night games this season.

* Washington is 36-21- (+5.8 Units) after a loss this season.

Consider me thrilled that the Nats got a loss to the Mets out of their collective systems last night in New York's 7-6 win. Good, now the Mets can contend with the hottest pitcher in baseball who goes by the name of Stephen Strasburg. The 29-year-old right-hander has been preternatural over his last five starts, allowing just one run over that span, which occurred in his last start against the Dodgers. That lone LA run Strasburg surrendered in the second inning of Washington's 7-1 victory ended a franchise-record 35-inning scoreless streak.

On the flipside, New York's starter Noah Syndergaard will return after a five-month absence on the DL. However, the plan is that he will only pitch the first-inning and Matt Harvey will take his place in the second. Sounds strange, right? Well, if Stephen Strasburg is on the other side of this matchup it doesn't matter who's chuckin' for the Mets because Washington's superstar on the mound has been lights out! Back the Nats in your MLB picks.
