Mining the Diamond is back with two more premium MLB picks as we peruse the pitching matchups, historical trends, and odds to deliver the top plays for Friday night.

Rangers (27-32, -5.3 units) vs. Nationals (38-21, +8.6 units)
  • Washington is 26-8 (+16.4 units) in night games this season.

  • Washington is 32-18 (+5.7 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Washington is 24-14 (+5.4 units) after a win this season.

  • Texas is 9-18 (-7.7 units) in road games this season.

  • Texas is 7-12 (-4.6 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

  • Texas is 19-26 (-8.2 units) in night games this season.

This is the first of a three game-set between a team that has won eight of its last 10 versus a club that dropped five of its last six. The Nationals not only have been hot but are at home tonight with fresh troops ready to swing for the fences as manager Dusty Baker gave starters Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rendon last night off in the team’s 6-1 win over the Orioles. Starting pitcher Tanner Roark has sparkled over his last three starts with a 3-0 record, a 2.08 ERA complemented by a 0.96 WHIP.

On the flipside, the struggling Rangers send Andrew Cashner to the hill who owns a 1-4 mark when starting against the Nats with an ERA of 5.20 and a WHIP of 1.651. The odds are high on the chalky home favorites but not high enough to deter us from advising a wager on Washington in our MLB picks for Friday night.

Twins (30-26, +4.9 units) vs. Giants (25-37, -12.6 units)
  • San Francisco is 15-22 (-5.3 units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

  • San Francisco is 7-17 (-11.2 units) after a win this season.

  • San Francisco is 16-24 (-9.9 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Minnesota is 18-9 (+10.0 units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

  • Minnesota is 18-8 (+12.5 units) in road games this season.

  • Minnesota is 14-6 (+9.4 units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

They say there’s nothin’ sweetah than a repeatah – well that’s how they say it in Boston anyway. Tonight we will honor that age-old axiom and once again back the Minnesota Twins who cashed for us last night in a 2-1 win over the Mariners.  We like the pitching matchup with Ervin Santana in the box for the Twins versus a struggling Matt Moore for the Giants. Santana’s team record is 36-20 (+17.9 Units) when playing on Friday throughout his career while Moore’s team record is 6-18 (-12.7 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.

With respect to the historical trends and the fact that the Giants should not be favored against virtually any team, let alone one with a winning record, we will gladly back the road pup in this one and watch the Twins get the win for the second consecutive night.
