Mining the Diamond cashed both of its selections last night as the Astros edged the Royals and the Rays thumped the Cardinals as big road underdogs. Let's sweep another pair in Saturday's MLB picks!

Mets (56-71, -23.4 Units) at Nationals (76-50, +5.8 Units)

* Washington is 9-4 (+3.8 Units) against the Mets this season.

* Washington is 30-17 (+5.7 Units) after a loss this season.

* Washington is 29-14 (+8.1 Units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

* New York is 12-35 (-23.6 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

* New York is 11-25 (-17.7 Units) in day games this season.

* New York is 8-16 (-8.2 Units) in August games this season.

Let's go no further than Washington's starter today, Gio Gonzalez. The Nationals' nine-year veteran owns a team record of 13-5 when starting against the Mets with an ERA of 2.94 and a WHIP of 1.12. In addition, the Gio Gonzalez of 2017 could be even better than his Cy Young Award contending season of 2012 as Gonzalez has been terrific all year long but over his last three starts he has been virtually unhittable. Gonzalez totes a 3-0 record and a patently absurd 0.46 ERA with a 0.91WHIP over his last three starts.

The MLB odds makers are making it too difficult to back the Nats on the money line which means we will shift gears and obliterate all that juice by shifting to the run line. Washington lost to the Mets in the opener of this four-game set last night by the score of 4-2 but should be locked and loaded with Big G on the hill today. Back home chalk on the run line in your MLB picks in this one.

Pirates (61-68, -6.8 Units) at Reds (55-74, -8.2 Units)

* Cincinnati is 27-26 (+8.2 Units) against division opponents this season.

* Cincinnati is 22-15 (+6.7 Units) at home when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

* Cincinnati is 9-2 (+9.3 Units) against the Pirates this season.

* Pittsburgh is 38-49 (-14.2 Units) in night games this season.

* Pittsburgh is 7-17 (-9.5 Units) on the road when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

* Pittsburgh is 13-25 (-11.5 Units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

Although no one will confuse the Reds with an ATM machine after dropping 8.2 units up to this point in the season, we can't help but take a flier on Cincinnati in this spot and against this opponent. The Reds are 9-2 versus the Bucs this season and notched another W last night against Pittsburgh last night in the first of this three-game series.

Luis Castillo is chuckin' for the Reds and has performed well over his last three starts with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP with Cincinnati winning two of those three contests. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole is preparing to get slammed once again by the Reds where his team record is an astounding 0-9 with an ERA of 5.14 and a WHIP of 1.46 in his nine starts against Cincinnati. Let's not tempt fate and simply go with the flow. Back the Reds tonight and cash that ticket!
