Mining the Diamond registered a 2-0 Sunday in our MLB picks with the A’s crushing the Rangers and the Tribe covering on the run line over the Mariners. Let’s start the week the same way we ended last week with nothing but winners!

GAME #2 - Atlanta (70-84, -0.3 Units) at Mets (66-89, -31.4 Units)
  • New York is 33-17 (+16.8 Units) when playing on Monday over the last three seasons.
  • New York’s starter Seth Lugo’s team record is 11-4 (+8.1 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • New York’s starter Seth Lugo’s team record is 11-2 (+9.8 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record over the last two seasons.
  • Atlanta is 6-10 (-2.8 Units) when playing on Monday this season.
  • Atlanta is 55-70 (-7.0 Units) against right-handed starters this season.
  • Atlanta is 11-14 (-6.4 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record in the second half of the season.

These NL East rivals are playing out the string but there’s opportunity in the second leg of this doubleheader today as the teams begin this four-game set. The Mets are 9-6 versus the Braves this season and Seth Lugo is on the hill to face off against a team in which he has posted a 2-0 record in his two career starts versus the Braves with an ERA of 1.93 and a WHIP of 1.07. Lugo had one clunker against the Cubs wedged between a pair of impressive starts over his last three and his 2.84 ERA and 1.07 WHIP at home this season make him a very tempting offer against a weak hitting Atlanta lineup. Let’s back the Mets in Game 2 of this doubleheader in our MLB picks tonight.

Blue Jays (73-83, -20.8 Units) at Red Sox (91-64, +9.8 Units)
  • Boston is 12-4 (+8.1 Units) against the Blue Jays this season
  • Boston is 34-14 (+15.7 Units) in September games over the last two seasons.
  • Boston is 68-43 (+14.1 Units) in night games this season.
  • Toronto is 15-23 (-12.7 Units) against left-handed starters this season.
  • Toronto is 28-45 (-22.8 Units) after a win this season.
  • Toronto is 33-42 (-14.3 Units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

An AL East crown is within spitting distance for the boys from Boston and the Blue Jays are simply standing in their way. Boston’s southpaw starter Drew Pomeranz has been at his best recently with a 2-0 mark and a 1.47 ERA complemented by a 1.03 WHIP over his last three appearances. The Jays have Brett Anderson on the hill who was torched in his last start, lasting only 1 1/3 innings before being chased in a 15-5 loss to the Royals. Anderson has been abysmal recently with a 9.26 ERA over his last three and a 1.92 WHIP.

Let’s not overthink this one as Boston is postseason bound and want to do away with their closest competitor, their nemesis the New York Yankees, for the division title. Let’s eschew the money line and shift gears to the run line that the MLB odds makers are offering on this one and watch a blowout in Beantown.
