Mining the Diamond found a gem Thursday in our MLB picks when we locked on to a big underdog in the form of the Texas Rangers. Let’s review the MLB odds and find more winners on Friday night.

Nationals (19-9, +5.8 units) At Phillies (12-15, -0.1 units)
  • Philadelphia is 57-82 (-12.4 units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last three seasons.
  • Philadelphia is 24-37 (-11.3 units) in May over the last three seasons.
  • Philadelphia is 70-99 (-12.2 units) against division opponents over the last three seasons.
  • Philadelphia is 108-164 (-26.3 units) against right-handed starters over the last three seasons.
  • Washington is 10-3 (+6.6 units) in road games this season.
  • Washington is 18-8 (+5.8 units) against right-handed starters this season.
  • Washington is 15-6 (+6.8 Units) against the Phillies in Philadelphia over the last three seasons
  • Washington’s starter Stephen Strasburg is 8-2 when starting against the Phillies with an ERA of 2.47 and a WHIP of 0.863. His team's record is 14-5 (+6.1 units) in these starts.

Although I am not fond of laying the lumber on the road, there are times when you must make an exception, and this is one of those occasions. The MLB odds makers have installed the Nats as high as -175, but if you shop around you can get a much better number. Washington starter Stephen Strasburg has been lights out against the Phillies throughout his career, and he will be opposed by rookie Nick Pivetta with only one MLB start under his belt. Washington easily leads all teams in runs scored with 179 on the season and its offense, coupled with a strong outing from Strasburg, should make this an easy winner in our MLB picks.

Red Sox (15-13, +0.3 units) At Twins (14-12, +1.8 units)
  • Minnesota is 39-75 (-28.9 Units) after a loss over the last two seasons.
  • Minnesota’s starter Phil Hughes is 5-8 when starting against the Red Sox with an ERA of 5.19 and a WHIP of 1.452.
  • Minnesota is 1-5 (-5.3 units) at home when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • Boston is 9-3 (+5.2 units) after a loss this season.
  • Boston is 33-24 (+8.6 units) when playing on Friday over the last three seasons.
  • Boston’s starter Eduardo Rodriguez has a 1.56 ERA in his last three starts.

One of the hidden pitching gems in the American League is Eduardo Rodriguez. E-Rod, as he was called after he began his big-league career with great success, has been hampered by injuries, but he appears to be getting his groove back on and should have little trouble mowing down a pedestrian Minnesota offense. The Twins counter with Phil Hughes, who was hammered by the Red Sox in his last two outings against them and is 5-8 with an ERA of 5.19 and a WHIP of 1.452 in his career appearances against Boston. This is both an endorsement of Rodriguez and a heavy fade against Hughes, which makes Boston an easy choice here.
