Mining the Diamond peruses the MLB odds as we mine team stats and research historical trends to come up with our two premier betting choices for Tuesday, April 18th.

Diamondbacks (9-5, +6.8 units) vs. Padres (5-9, -1.2 units)
  • San Diego is 18-33 when playing on a Tuesday over the past three seasons.

  • San Diego is 105-145 (-24.3 units) against right-handers over the past three seasons.

  • San Diego is 66-90 when playing a team with a winning record over the past three seasons.

  • San Diego’s starting pitcher Jarred Cossart owns a 5.40 lifetime ERA at Petco Park.

  • Arizona is 88-63 (+21 units) when playing teams with a losing record over the past three seasons.

  • Arizona is 6-3 (+4.5 units) vs. right-handers this season.

Shelby Miller (1-1, 5.06 ERA, 1.59WHIP) will be taking the hill for the Diamondbacks and will face a markedly inferior offense tonight than those of the Indians and Giants, his two previous opponents. Miller is hoping to rebound from a disastrous first season with Arizona where he was DL’ed with a right index finger sprain in the early part of 2016 and simply wasn’t the upper echelon pitcher he had been with St. Louis and Atlanta. He has pitched solidly, though unspectacularly, against quality offenses thus far and should mow down a lackluster Padres offense. The D-Backs own the best record in the National League and have historically dominated weak teams.

Red Sox (8-5, +2.4 units) vs. Blue Jays (2-10, -10.8 units)
  • Toronto is 1-9 when the total is 8 to 8.5.

  • Toronto is 2-8 vs. division opponents

  • Toronto is 24-36 (-19 units) in April over the past three seasons.

  • Toronto is 1-5 vs. teams with a winning record.

  • Boston is 92-70 (+9.3 units) when playing against a team with a losing record.

  • Boston is 11-8 (6.1 units) in games played in Toronto over the past three seasons.

The wild card in this one is Boston’s Triple-A call-up Brian Johnson who gets the start tonight. The oddsmakers are making it virtually impossible not to back the BoSox in our MLB picks as the team near the top of the AL East is taking on a Toronto club with the worst record in baseball with the fewest runs (34) scored. The Boston offense will take on the Blue Jays’ Marcus Stroman who has been his top-tier self thus far with a 1-1 record and a 1.76 ERA. Nevertheless, the return on our investment is too tempting to avoid not backing Boston and their bevy of bright young offensive stars.
