Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column found exclusively here at Sportsbookreview.com. After a 1-1 Saturday let’s discuss our top two selections on Sunday’s slate of games.

Braves (59-75, -4.9 Units) at Cubs (75-60, -14.3 Units)
  • Chicago is 26-11 (+5.9 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record in the second half of the season.
  • Chicago is 21-10 (+8.8 Units) against left-handed starters this season.
  • Chicago is 6-0 (+6.0 Units) against the Braves this season
  • Atlanta is 14-24 (-2.9 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season.
  • Atlanta is 7-14 (-6.5 Units) when playing on Sunday this season.
  • Atlanta is 22-33 (-0.7 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

Don’t overthink this one folks. The Cubs have owned the Braves this season with a perfect 6-0 record and are gunning for the sweep in this four-game set. Mike Montgomery takes the hill for Chicago and was masterful the last time he met Atlanta when he pitched his way through six innings of two hit baseball en route to Chicago’s 6-2 win on July 19th. Montgomery has been dazzling of late and is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP into this one.

Max Fried takes the hill for the Braves and was summoned from Double-A earlier this month and posted a 5.40 ERA in four relief appearances. He will be making his first major league start in front a sold-out and frenzied Wrigley Field crowd. It will be a baptism by fire for the Double-A prospect and we will take full advantage of this mismatch by backing the Cubs on the run line in our MLB picks.

Red Sox (77-59, -4.5 Units) at Yankees (72-63, -7.7 Units)
  • New York is 15-18 (-6.1 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season.
  • New York is 36-35 (-7.4 Units) after a win this season.
  • New York is 11-13 (-4.6 Units) when playing on Sunday this season.
  • Boston is 38-21 (+12.8 Units) after a loss this season.
  • Boston is 57-40 (+7.5 Units) in night games this season.
  • Boston is 61-43 (+8.0 Units) against right-handed starters this season.

Anytime you can get Chris Sale at a virtual coin flip, you grab him. The MLB odds makers are making it too easy to take the contending AL Cy Young Award winner and even though he had a bumpy ride the last time he faced the Yankees, which resulted in a 4-3 loss for Boston, we will back him here. Sale pitched a gem in his last outing when he blanked the Blue Jays through seven innings and captured a 3-0 victory in Toronto. Expect more of the same as Sale is the real deal and we are getting him at next to nothing here.
