Mining the Diamond previews the MLB odds, pitching matchups, and historical trends to deliver its top two premium picks. Let’s review tonight’s slate and cash a pair of big winners!

Angels (30-32, -3.1 units) vs. Tigers (29-29, -0.9 units)
  • Detroit is 16-11 (+3.4 units) in home games this season.

  • Detroit is 4-1 (+2.6 units) in June games this season.

  • Detroit’s starter Michael Fulmer is 2-1 when starting against the Angels with an ERA of 1.83 and a WHIP of 0.76.

  • Los Angeles is 20-26 (-7.0 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • Los Angeles is 1-7 (-6.2 units) when playing on Thursday this season.

  • Los Angeles is 2-8 (-5.4 units) as a road underdog of +125 to +175 this season.

The Tigers have won five of their last six including last night’s 4-0 shutout of their opponents tonight. They come into this one with a starting pitcher in Michael Fulmer who has pitched well in his three starts against Los Angeles as evidenced by his 1.83 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. The Angels have JC Ramirez on the hill who got hammered by Detroit in his start back in May when he allowed five runs on eight hits in a 7-1 loss.

The MLB odds are high on the .500 Tigers but the trends tell us this line should be higher. Angels’ starter Ramirez was torched in his last outing when he surrendered seven runs on eight hits and was chased after four plus innings in an 11-5 loss to the Twins. Let’s back the team that’s rolling with the home field advantage and last season’s AL  Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer against a floundering Angels team that has dropped four of its last six.

 Twins (29-26, +3.9 units) vs. Mariners (30-30, +1.0 unit)
  • Seattle is 49-51 (-5.8 units) at home when the money line is +125 to -125 over the last three seasons.

  • Seattle is 43-52 (-24.6 Units) in home games after a win over the last three seasons.

  • Seattle is 19-21 (-2.5 units) in night games this season.

  • Minnesota is 13-6 (+8.4 units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125.

  • Minnesota is 17-8 (+11.5 units) on the road this season.

  • Minnesota’s starter Kyle Gibson’s team record is 9-3 (+10.0 Units) in night road games over the last two seasons.

Minnesota’s starter Kyle Gibson has fared well against Seattle in his six appearances with a 4-2 (+2.7 units) team record with an ERA of 2.92 and a WHIP of 1.29. Gibson is by no means a premier pitcher but his last two starts, in which he allowed a total of four runs, indicate he’s freeing himself from the funk he was in earlier this season after a quick stint in the minors to regain his form.

In addition, the Mariners will be without the services of AL batting leader Jean Segura and RBI leader Nelson Cruz who are both out with leg injuries. We like the road dog here to cash a ticket in our MLB picks for Thursday night.
