Mining the Diamond had a perfect 2-0 night in our MLB picks and also had a bonus article that correctly predicted the Brewers victory over the Padres. In total it was a 3-0 day but we are looking for more winners on Wednesday’s MLB slate.

Nationals (25-13, +6.2 units) vs. Pirates (16-23, -5.2 units)
  • Pittsburgh is 5-2 (+2.1 units) as a home favorite of -125 to -175 this season.

  • Pittsburgh’s starter Gerrit Cole has a 1.80 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP at home this season.

  • Pittsburgh is 99-79 at home over the last three seasons.

  • Washington is 23-25 (-6.9 units) on the road when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last three seasons.

  • Washington’s bullpen has a 6.23 ERA on the road this season.

  • Washington’s starter Jacob Turner has a 0-1 record when starting against the Pirates with an ERA of 14.55 and a WHIP of 2.309.

The Pirates suffered an 8-4 setback last night in their first of three with the Nationals. However, I like the pitching matchup in this one tonight as the Bucs get tagged as the MLB odds favorite with good reason. Gerrit Cole has turned in three fine performances in a row and is poised to make it four straight. Cole’s teams’ record against the Nats is 3-1 and he owns a 2.92 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in those appearances.

Conversely, Washington’s starter Jacob Turner is a reliever who is sometimes called upon to start and tonight is such a case. In his only appearance against Pittsburgh, Turner was blistered for seven runs on seven hits in a 7-3 defeat. I see Turner getting knocked out early and once that happens, the Nationals bullpen and its 6.23 road ERA, will come into play which spells good news for all those backing the Bucs in their MLB picks.

Yankees (23-13, +8.5 units) vs. Royals (16-22, -5.0 units)
  • Kansas City is 8-13 (-4.5 units) after a loss this season.

  • Kansas City is 26-33 (-10.2 units) when playing on a Wednesday over the last three seasons.

  • Kansas City is 12-16 (-3.9 units) against right-handed starters this season.

  • New York is 6-2 (+4.6 units) against left-handed starters this season.

  • New York is 15-6 (+8.7 units) after a win his season.

  • New York is 4-1 (+2.9 units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

The Bombers dropped a 7-1 loss on the Royals last night and will do so again this evening. The Pinstripers are crushing the ball lately as evidenced by their 25 runs plated over the last three games. Kansas City’s offense is abysmal this season and ranks 30th in the league in runs scored with just 120 on the season. On top of all that, KC’s starter Jason Vargas is 0-5 when starting against New York with an ERA of 6.64 and a WHIP of 1.500. That says it all as this anemic offense is saddled with a winless pitcher against their potent opposition tonight.
