Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column that researches the hottest trends and pitching matchups in conjunction with the MLB odds to deliver two premium selections each day. Let's cash a pair on Saturday's baseball card.

Giants (31-51, -23.0 Units) at Pirates (37-43, -4.9 Units)

* Pittsburgh is 10-2 (+10.0 Units) when playing on Saturday this season.

* Pittsburgh is 10-4 (+4.4 Units) as a home favorite of -125 to -175 this season.

* Pittsburgh is 15-10 (+7.8 Units) in day games this season.

* San Francisco is 20-34 (-18.1 Units) against right-handed starters this season.

* San Francisco is 9-20 (-14.2 Units) in day games this season.

* San Francisco is 7-17 (-10.7 Units) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season.

What do you get when the Giants are on a winning streak? Give up? A loss waiting to happen. That pretty much crystallizes our feelings on this game today as the second worst team in the league enters the middle game of this three-game set in Pittsburgh. The Giants bats roared last night in a 13-5 victory in the series opener but today they trot to the mound a struggling hurler in Matt Moore. Struggling is putting it mildly as Moore has been torched over his last five starts that have delivered an 8.88 ERA and a team record of 1-4. The 28-year-old southpaw has only one start against the Pirates which resulted in an 8-5 loss in which Moore allowed five runs through six innings and a road ERA of 8.39 and a WHIP hovering around 2.00.

Although Pittsburgh starter Chad Kuhl will not conjure images of Francisco Liriano in his prime, he is at least a few clicks above the floundering Moore and should get help from his offense against the woeful Moore. Back the Bucs in your MLB picks this afternoon and use the run line because when they win this one, they'll win by a lot.

Phillies (26-52, -18.8 Units) at Mets (37-42, -12.1 Units)

* New York is 6-3 (+2.4 Units) at home when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

* New York is 13-9 (+0.2 Units) as a home favorite of -125 to -175 this season.

* New York is 69-48 (+12.8 Units) in day games over the last three seasons.

* Philadelphia is 4-14 (-7.6 Units) as a road underdog of +125 to +175 this season.

* Philadelphia is 1-11 (-9.9 Units) on the road when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

* Philadelphia is 14-38 (-18.8 Units) after a loss this season.

New York's Zack Wheeler is 3-1 when starting against the Phillies with an ERA of 3.07 and a WHIP of 1.097 while Philadelphia's  Jeremy Hellickson is 2-4 when starting against the Mets with an ERA of 8.21 and a WHIP of 1.794. However, Wheeler is coming off the DL after getting lit up in his last two starts which were a result of a bout with biceps tendinitis. He has proven to be an effective pitcher and needed a vacation to let his arm cool. Wheeler is opposed by a Philadelphia lineup whose top five hitters combined for a 0-19 performance last night in New York's 2-1 win. Look for more of the same as the anemic bats of the Phillies just cannot get the job done no matter who they face and the MLB odds are giving us a reason to bite on the Mets.
