Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column focusing on pitching matchups, historical trends, as well as the odds in order to deliver two top selections each day. Let’s see what Thursday’s card offers us today.

Orioles (72-74, -5.6 Units) at Yankees (79-66, -3.8 Units)
  • New York is 8-4 (+2.8 Units) in September games this season.
  • New York is 31-23 (+0.6 Units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • New York is 36-27 (+7.6 Units) against division opponents this season.
  • Baltimore is 4-8 (-5.0 Units) in September games this season.
  • Baltimore is 33-42 (-8.6 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.
  • Baltimore is 15-26 (-10.6 Units) on the road when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.

New York’s starter tonight, Masahiro Tanaka, is coming off perhaps his worst performance of the season when he was drilled by the Rangers to the tune of seven runs over just four innings resulting in an 11-5 defeat. And that is why the MLB odds are not even higher on the Bombers tonight as they take on the sub .500 Orioles in the opener of this four-game set in the Bronx.

Wade Miley is on the hill for the O’s and his career mark vs. New York is 0-3 with a 4.83 ERA and a1.59 WHIP. The Yanks are in hot pursuit of the AL East title, now just three games back of the division leading Red Sox, and we see Tanaka bouncing back solidly from his last disastrous outing. In addition, the Yankees are 18-8 (+8.1 Units) against the Orioles over the past three seasons in games played in New York. This season parallels that record as the Bombers are 5-1 versus Baltimore in games played at Yankee Stadium and each of those five wins have been by a margin of at least two runs. We see a big win by New York which is why we are eschewing the money line in favor of the run line and including the Yankees in our MLB picks tonight.

Blue Jays (68-78, -21.0 Units) at Twins (76-69, +10.7 Units)
  • Minnesota is 52-38 (+16.2 Units) in night games this season.
  • Minnesota is 12-8 (+3.5 Units) when playing on Thursday this season.
  • Minnesota is 35-33 (+4.2 Units) when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • Toronto is 9-20 (-9.8 Units) on the road when the total is 9 to 9.5 this season.
  • Toronto is 39-53 (-22.8 Units) in night games this season.
  • Toronto is 25-41 (-17.4 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

The Twins have won five of their last seven and have averaged north of 6 ½ runs per game over that duration. Minnesota is also firmly ensconced in a wild card race which gives them greater incentive as the season begins to wind down. Jose Berrios is on the hill for the home team and he has had two excellent performances sandwiched around one pedestrian performance. On the flipside, Toronto’s Brett Anderson’s team record is 15-20 (-14.3 Units) in night games over the last two seasons. Let’s lay the lumber on the emerging Twins in this one.
