Mining the Diamond is a daily MLB picks column focusing on pitching matchups, historical trends and the sharpest odds available in order to render the best value. Let's review our two premium picks from Sunday's slate of games.

Padres (51-65, +1.1 Units) at Dodgers (82-34, +29.7 Units)

* Los Angeles is 35-8 (+21.4 Units) at home when the total is 8 to 8.5 over the last two seasons.

* Los Angeles is 48-14 (+22.0 Units) in home games this season.

* Los Angeles is 10-1 (+7.2 Units) as a home favorite of -250 to -330 this season.

* San Diego is 18-33 (-6.5 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

* San Diego is 14-24 (-5.2 Units) in day games this season.

* San Diego is 7-17 (-6.0 Units) on the road when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

In the 34 victories where the Dodgers were favored by north of -200, the margin of victory was greater than one run in 28 of those occurrences. And so it is we have no problem whatsoever laying the 1 ½ runs as the Dodgers send the red hot Kenta Maeda to the hill who has posted a 2-0 mark and a 1.06 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP over his last three starts. LA's bullpen has a 16-3 mark and a 2.25 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP in its home games this season. In other words, even if Maeda isn't up to snuff the bullpen is more than capable of shutting down an anemic Padres' offense.

In closing, Big Blue has an 8-3 mark against the Padres this season. In those eight victories, each and every one was by a margin of two runs or more. The MLB odds are simply too severe to back the Dodgers on the money line but the run line will make more than sense...it will make dollars.

Red Sox (66-50, +1.1 Units) at Yankees (61-54, -6.6 Units)

* New York is 10-11 (-3.6 Units) when playing on Sunday this season.

* New York is 4-7 (-6.0 Units) in August games this season.

* New York's starter Jordan Montgomery's team record is  0-1 when starting against the Red Sox with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 2.25.

* Boston is 8-1 (+7.5 Units) in August games this season.

* Boston is 47-34 (+4.4 Units) in night games this season.

* Boston is 24-17 (+4.1 Units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.

The aforementioned stats are all well and good but what they don't mention is the stone cold assassin taking the mound for the Red Sox, Chris Sale. The Boston ace has had one dreadful start all season long which was a seven run, eight hit, aberration against the Indians in what resulted in a 12-10 victory. Even when the man is uncharacteristically lousy his team still wins! But look at the start previous and subsequent to the egg he laid against Cleveland and you will find vintage Chris Sale. The 6'6" southpaw blanked both the Mariners and Rays while allowing a combined five hits over 15 innings of work in those victories.

The bottom line is that very rarely will you see a pitcher in a bid for the Cy Young Award and MVP trophy in the same season. Sale is also 4-2 when starting against the Yankees with a micro 1.36 ERA and a stunning WHIP of 0.81. Back the Beast Chris Sale in your MLB picks tonight.
