Mining the Diamond is a daily column focusing on historical trends, pitching matchups as well as the MLB odds in order to deliver two top plays each day. Let’s cash a pair on Friday’s card to start our weekend off right!

Rockies (47-28, +21.2 units) At Dodgers (48-26, +11.4 units)
  • Los Angeles is 59-49 (-13.0 Units) against division opponents over the last two seasons.
  • Los Angeles is 34-36 (-12.8 Units) against left-handed starters over the last two seasons.
  • Los Angeles is 99-78 (-10.0 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • Colorado is 11-4 (+7.9 Units) when the total is 8 to 8.5 this season.
  • Colorado is 25-13 (+15.2 Units) in road games this season.
  • Colorado is 20-11 (+12.0 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.

Had this line been tighter I would pass, but the MLB odds are too tempting to resist and anyone who has been following this column knows that value plays have paid off big time in our MLB picks this season. The Rockies are 5-4 (+3.0 units) against the Dodgers this season and begin this three-game set against an LA team that has won seven straight. However, all streaks come to an end, and Rockies starter Kyle Freeland has a 2-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts. In addition, the 24-year-old rookie and former eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft faced LA twice in April, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA, in which Colorado notched victories in both games. This number is inflated due to the scorching win streak Big Blue has amassed, and though the public will swoon we will grab all that juice in a game that is more of a toss-up than a blowout.

Orioles (35-37, -3.2 units) At Rays (39-36, +2.4 units)
  • Tampa Bay is 66-85 (-23.3 Units) in night games over the last two seasons.
  • Tampa Bay’s starter Chris Archer’s team record is 9-15 (-10.0 Units) in home games over the last two seasons.
  • Tampa Bay’s starter Chris Archer’s team record is 9-15 (-10.0 Units) in home games over the last two seasons.
  • Baltimore is 61-53 (+12.9 Units) against division opponents over the last two seasons.
  • Baltimore is 25-16 (+7.5 Units) against the Rays over the last three seasons
  • Baltimore’s starter Ubaldo Jimenez’s team record is 7-2 (+5.9 units) when starting against the Rays with an ERA of 3.47 and a WHIP of 1.193.

Baltimore has been giving up runs in droves recently, yet the Birds are still 3-3 over their last six games and have a pitcher on the mound whose teams have won seven of his nine career starts against the Rays. Ubaldo Jimenez got rattled in two straight starts before being relegated to the bullpen, but his return to the starting rotation suggests he may be righting his ship after tossing seven innings of two run ball in an 8-5 win over the Cardinals on Sunday. Tampa Bay will hand the ball to Chris Archer, who is 3-6 career when starting against the Orioles with an ERA of 4.79 and a WHIP of 1.39. His only outing against Baltimore this season came on April 24 when he was tagged for five runs and six hits, including three home runs, resulting in a 6-3 defeat. Let’s back the big road pup here and cash a ticket!
