Yesterday we cashed both of our MLB picks with the Diamondbacks crushing the Dodgers and the Brewers downing the Nationals. Let’s keep this rolling as we deliver our top two selections for Friday’s MLB card.

Dodgers (91-41, +28.7 Units) at Padres (59-74, +2.1 Units)
  • San Diego is 7-12 (-2.2 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season.
  • San Diego is 21-40 (-8.5 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record this season.
  • San Diego is 22-31 (-1.8 units) against division opponents this season.
  • Los Angeles is 50-15 (+23.9 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record this season.
  • Los Angeles is 25-7 (+11.0 Units) when playing against a team with a losing record in the second half of the season.
  • Los Angeles is 17-4 (+9.0 Units) when playing on Friday this season.

The LA Dodgers have taken nine of 12 from the Padres this season and are 4-1 in the five games hosted by San Diego. In addition, Big Blue has their superstar ace on the hill in the form of Clayton Kershaw who returns after a month-long absence with a back injury. Kershaw should be on a fairly strict pitch count but his blistering numbers this season preclude me from doing anything but including LA in my MLB picks tonight.

Kershaw’s numbers are outstanding and in his last three starts before he was sidelined, the 29-year-old southpaw had a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP. Kershaw’s team record is 23-8 (+7.0 Units) when starting against the Padres with an ERA of 2.00 and a WHIP of 1.01. The Dodgers five-game losing streak comes to a screeching halt tonight with the specter of Kershaw looming large to buoy the entire team.

Red Sox (76-58, +2.2 Units) at Yankees (71-62, -6.6 Units)
  • New York is 9-12 (-5.6 Units) when playing on Friday this season.
  • New York is 14-17 (-5.4 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season.
  • New York’s starter Sonny Gray’s team record is 1-10 (-10.5 Units) against division opponents over the last two seasons.
  • Boston is 56-40 (+5.9 Units) in night games this season.
  • Boston is 37-21 (+11.1 Units) after a loss this season.
  • Boston is 36-18 (+18.6 Units) in September games over the last three seasons.

We had to glance more than a few times at the MLB odds this morning after noticing that the Yankees were such lopsided favorites over the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. After researching this matchup we find that Sonny Gray’s appetite for divisional games is lackluster at best. Gray’s team record against divisional opponents is 1-10 over the last two seasons and here he faces the Bombers’ legendary rival tonight. Let’s not overthink this one and back the road dog here.
