Well, how are you supposed to top that? After the New York Mets (89-72) beat the Atlanta Braves (88-73) in the first game of today's doubleheader, those two square up once again at 4:40 p.m. ET with a playoff spot on the line for the favored Braves.

  • The Mets already clinched one of the final two NL wild-card spots with a wild 8-7 win earlier today
  • The Braves can secure the other spot with a win to close this doubleheader
  • If New York wins again, the Arizona Diamondbacks would make the postseason over Atlanta.

Our Mets vs. Braves prediction for Game 2 is focused on Atlanta's bats in a favorable matchup with New York's bullpen.

This is one heck of a short price for the Braves against a team they failed to beat mere hours minutes before the first pitch, and it isn't my favorite way to bet this contest (more on that later).

If you're betting on either team's moneyline, though, it's hard not to side with Atlanta - the only team in this contest with something to play for.

The Mets got their much-needed win out of the way in the first game of today's doubleheader, as a stunning six-run eighth inning and a two-run blast from Francisco Lindor in the ninth helped New York secure the final NL wild-card spot.

With their seed locked in, the Mets scratched expected starter Luis Severino and will likely turn to its bullpen for Game 2. I wouldn't be surprised if New York shelved some of its top bats in an effort to stay fresh (and healthy) for the wild-card round.

Meanwhile, the Braves' season comes down to the result of this second game. Chris Sale was expected to start, but back spasms will force Grant Holmes onto the mound in a critical spot. Expect the team to empty its bullpen if necessary to punch its ticket to the postseason.

Motivation doesn't guarantee a win, which is why I wouldn't stake too much on the moneyline. But expect Atlanta to stake everything on this one game against an opponent that is actively saving its stars for later in the week.

Mets vs. Braves prop bets: Game 2

Prediction: Braves Over 5.5 runs (+100) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best odds: +100 via bet365 | Implied probability: 50%

This is my favorite way to bet the second game of today's doubleheader, and it has everything to do with the Mets' plans on the mound.

After clinching a playoff berth, New York ditched its plans to start Severino and could turn to any number of pitchers over nine innings in an effort to keep its rotation healthy and rested for the wild-card round.

Here's the problem: the Mets can't afford to burn through their bullpen, either. That could mean a situation where one of their relief arms gets toasted but has to stay out there to eat up innings and help New York get out of today unscathed.

All of that bodes incredibly well for the Braves' lineup, which went off for seven runs in the first game of this doubleheader and should be able to tee off in the second.

You can bet Over 4.5 runs at DraftKings at -140 odds, but I prefer this alt-total at +100 odds via bet365 with fireworks likely at Truist Park.
