Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets are favored on the MLB odds Friday night to even their long weekend series in Atlanta against the Braves.

That Atlanta and New York entered the series on Thursday as the top two teams in the NL East was something of a mild shock. That fragile Braves pitcher Anibal Sanchez was injured before he could even throw a pitch to Mets hitters in the series opener, well, that came as no surprise at all given the righthander’s long history of DL time.

The two clubs get after it again at tonight with a 7:35 PM (ET) first pitch in Atlanta, Sean Newcomb (1-1, 4.02) delivering that initial toss before New York’s Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 2.95) follows him to the bump in the bottom of the first. Bookmaker has the Mets pegged on a -138 chalk line with a 7½-run total is carrying extra juice on the ‘over.’

Thor Looking For 1st Win Vs. Braves

The Braves came out swinging against Matt Harvey on Thursday, and kept the barrage going throughout the game for a 12-4 victory. Preston Tucker drove in five and Matt Wisler, called up from the minors when Sanchez went down in in pregame warmups, tossed seven strong innings for Atlanta. The result left the Mets with a 67-66 edge in this rivalry going back to start of 2011. New York made itself right at home in the first season of SunTrust Park by winning 7-of-10, ‘under’ bettors returning to the pay window in six of those matches.

The Mets are 4-0 in Syndergaard’s assignments this year, though Thor’s only been around long enough to collect half of those victories with New York carrying at least -140 chalk on the MLB odds each game. Syndergaard is pitching in this park for the first time and has never collected a dubya in four career starts vs. the Braves, the Mets 2-2 in those outings. Newcomb has one really good outing and two bad ones among his three starts to date, the irony being the good one came at Coors Field (6 IP, 0 R, 9 K). The southpaw has struggled at SunTrust in 13 career starts (3-7, 4.94) but is 1-2 with a solid 2.70 ERA in three tries vs. New York.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick

Dan Iassogna is expected to call balls and strikes on what should be a nice evening in Atlanta (mid-60s, clear skies for 1st pitch). His first three plate assignments of 2018 have finished 1-1-1 O/U/P, and the visitors have won each contest.

Games at SunTrust Park are running 5-2-3 O/U/P in the early going after leaning a little to the ‘under’ in its first year of operation. I’m a little concerned that New York skipper Mickey Callaway has already overworked his bullpen, but will still make my free baseball pick on Syndergaard and the Mets.
