Arizona Diamondbacks (C. Anderson) at NY Mets (Syndergaard)  7:10 ET
The Arizona Diamondbacks visit the NY Mets for a 3-game weekend set to conclude the first half of the season.  Arizona is clearly the better hitting team with the 8th ranked batting OPS of .730 compared to the Mets’ No. 30th ranked .653.  But, the Mets have the far superior pitching with the No. 4 ranked OPS at .662 compared to the D’Backs’ No. 24th ranked pitching of .740.  That pitching edge is reflected in today’s matchup.  That edge is embellished by the Mets’ 29-14 home record with only St. Louis and LA Dodgers featuring more home wins.  A hidden psychological edge favoring the New Yorkers is also at work in this contest.

Arizona is breathing a sigh of relief, as they enter this 3-game road set to close the first half of the season.  It took the D’Backs 13 tries to get to .500 at 42-42.  It finally came in a 7-4 victory at Texas on Wednesday night.  The D’Backs have done it with hitting of late with a .310 BA and 5.7 RPG in their last 9 games.  They enter on runs of 5-1 and 3-0 after sweeping the fading Texas Rangers.  But, runs will be a bit tougher to come by in this 3-game set.  That will be true beginning tonight, as they match up against one of the hottest home pitchers in MLB.  The D’Backs send C. Anderson to the mound, who pitched decently in his first 13 starts.  Since that time, however, in his last 3 starts, Anderson has a 7.64 ERA, allowing 7 HRs.

The Mets return home oozing with confidence, as a result of their 4-2 road trip against San Fran and LA Dodgers.  That includes a 4-1 victory over the Giants Wednesday night.  Now, they have had 48 hours to adjust to the west to east time travel, bringing them fresh for this 3-game set to conclude the first half of the season.  It has been the pitching that has led the way for the Mets of late, as they have a 1.41 ERA in going 8-5, leading up to tonight’s start.  Among the leaders in that regard has been their youngster, Syndergaard.  In his last 4 starts, Syndergaard has a 2.25 ERA with a .174 BAA.  He finally snapped his string of poor performances on the road.  In his previous outing, he worked 6 IP, allowing just 1 run and 2 hits in a 2-1 victory at LA Dodgers and Kershaw.  But, his best work has come from this mound.  In 5 starts where they have gone 4-1, the Mets have gone 4-1, Syndergaard has a 1.89 ERA and a 0.90 home WHIP.

This game has some nice components beginning with the letdown spot for the D’Backs and finishing with the strong home component for both the host Mets and their starting pitcher, Syndergaard.  Throw in the poor current form for D’Backs’ starter, Anderson, and you have the makings of a solid MLB pick.
