Sports handicapper Ian Cameron provides an MLB Early Lines Report for the baseball card taking place on Monday, September 5.

Detroit Tigers vs CH White Sox
The Chicago White Sox are favored here for one reason only Chris Sale being on the mound. He’s been terrific but the fact remains the White Sox have not necessarily been winning games in bunches with their ace lefty on the mound. Chicago is just 2-7 in Sale’s last 9 starts despite the fact he’s yielded 3 runs or less in most of those games. That is due to a slumping lineup and a bullpen that is completely out of gas and not very good at this stage of the season.

The White Sox were swept by the Tigers last week at Comerica Park being outscored 15-9 in the process and I don’t envision things going any better for them this week at home against a Detroit team playing well right now and playing with major purpose and motivation to make it into the playoffs as a Wildcard entry in the AL. Detroit is 7-3 in their last 10 games and they will have Justin Verlander on the mound and he has enjoyed a resurgence this season with a 3.30 ERA on the campaign and the Tigers have won six of his last eight starts. Verlander has been even stronger as of late surrendering just 5 runs in his last 20.2 innings of work over his last three starts with 2 walks and 22 strikeouts during that span. Chris Sale or not, the wrong team is favored here as the White Sox have no business laying any sort of price against the Tigers.

Texas Rangers vs Seattle Mariners
This near even money price is too good to pass up on the surging Texas Rangers who have won seven straight games with their ace on the mound. Cole Hamels will be on the mound and take a fantastic 1.91 ERA on the road with him into this game. Texas is 20-7 overall with Hamels on the mound and 10-4 on the road with him starting. Hamels got hit around by Seattle when he faced them last week allowing 6 runs in 4.1 innings but Texas still managed to win that game with their lineup providing some run support for their ace lefty to still emerge victorious in that game.

I expect him to bounce back with a much better outing against the Mariners here at Safeco Field and it’s worth noting that Texas is a perfect 6-0 in the last 6 starts by Hamels against Seattle. On the flip side, Felix Hernandez is on the mound for Seattle and he was roughed up by Texas last week when he faced them surrendering 6 runs in 4 innings and has lost each of his two starts against the Rangers this season. Seattle is a team fading very quickly out of the playoff mix on a 2-8 slide in their last 10 games and an easy team to fade in this price range against the best team in the American League for your MLB pick.
