The Cardinals turn to their ace Carlos Martinez Saturday afternoon (1:05 p.m. ET) in an effort to stop the streaking Yankees. A rejuvenated CC Sabathia gets the honors for the Pinstripers in the Bronx. Get your betting preview and pick here.

St. Louis Cardinals (3-7)

The bats are ice cold for the Cardinals to begin the year. Scoring just 3.7 runs per game, they rank in the bottom half in MLB in nearly every primary offensive category. A couple of areas that stand out are the team’s .631 OPS and 10.9 total bases per game, which rank 27th and 28th respectively. Combined with some lackluster pitching, St. Louis’ -15 run differential is better than only its AL Central rivals Pirates (-17) in all of baseball.

Manager Mike Matheny hopes his ace Carlos Martinez can turn the team’s fortunes around on Saturday. A 16-game winner in 2016, the right-hander is 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA through 12.1 frames to start this season. Martinez is coming off an extra day of rest, and Matheny will likely allow him to stretch out the start. The bullpen’s 7.86 ERA is the worst in the bigs.

Martinez pitched two innings of relief in his only showing against the Yanks. He’s faced just five hitters on New York’s current roster, yielding at least one hit to each. Chris Carter, Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner and Chase Headley are a combined 6-for-24 with a double the lone slap for extra bases.

The Cardinals are just 1-5 SU behind Martinez in interleague play. Poor run support is the issue, crossing the plate just 3.5 times per game. St. Louis has taken the first pitch chalk in every game, for what it’s worth.

New York Yankees (6-4)

The Yankees’ 4-3 win Friday night made it five in a row for only the fifth time in the last two seasons. A victory today would give the Pinstripers their first 6-0 home start since 2000.

Getting the honors for today’s start is CC Sabathia. The veteran southpaw is healthy and it shows. Sabathia is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA through 11 innings to begin the year. One concern is his number of walks (6) is greater than strikeouts (5). Sabathia has not squared off against the Cards since 2008, but Yankee fans are hoping he conjures up some old mojo in this one. The big guy is 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in three-lifetime starts.

The Yankees are 20-9 SU behind Sabathia in interleague play, including winning his last four outings dating back to 2015. In the last calendar year, the team is just 7-8 at Yankee Stadium when he commands the hill, though. Sabathia and the staff allow 3.87 runs per game. The lineup has scored more than four runs in just five of the outings, however.

St. Louis Cardinals vs N.Y. Yankees

After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, uncharacteristic blunders cost Matheny’s men the game last night with a Kolten Wong throwing an error and a silly base running mistake by Randal Grichul. The Cards are primed to turn the corner, and Martinez will make sure of it this afternoon. Look for the right-hander to control New York’s young lineup in their first look at his worm-killing sinker. Cardinals +100 is the MLB pick.
