Jeff Locke and the Pirates are firm favorites for game two of their series against the Marlins. Let's break down the MLB odds and see where we should go with our sports picks.
The Pirates are quoted at -145 to secure the victory tonight, this after they were able to hold on for the 4-2 win yesterday. Charlie Morton was solid in his first official MLB start of the season, and now it'll be up to Jeff Locke to carry on the momentum
We therefore find the Marlins listed in the +135 to +140 range. For those interested in making a play on the MLB odds total, you can find the number at an even eight runs right now.
Pittsburgh Pirates (Locke)
The Pirates are on a bit of a roll right now, as they've won four consecutive games to reach .500 for the first time in a couple of weeks. They easily swept past the New York Mets in a three-game series at home, and they carried that over into yesterday's opener against the Marlins. Morton was rock solid and Pittsburgh had some timely hits on their way to the 4-1 victory.
Next up in the rotation is left-hander Jeff Locke. The southpaw has been struggling this season, going 2-2 with a 5.28 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through his first eight starts. Locke, however, was reasonable effective in his latest start, going six innings and allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out six and walking two.
The 27-year-old has been much more productive when pitching at home this season, as he's sporting a 4.13 ERA as opposed to an awful 8.10 ERA over his three road assignments. The lefty is clearly more comfortable at PNC Park and this will be one of the easier matchups he'll face this season against a Marlins offense that doesn't scare many people, outside of Stanton of course.
Miami Marlins (Urena)
It hasn't been a positive month of May for the Marlins. They've gone 6-16 over their last 22 games, which has put their overall record at 18-28 for the season. They were able to take two of three against Baltimore over the weekend, but they were unable to get much going offensively yesterday against Morton. Now they'll try and get things going against Locke.
For Miami, Jose Urena will be taking the bump. He's only made it through three innings at the major league level and has been tagged for four hits and three earned runs. We have to take a peek at his minor league numbers to get a better feel for the 23-year-old right-hander. He's been excellent this season, recording a 1.21 ERA over six starts with a 22:12 K:BB ratio.
It's obviously not a big enough sample size to know just how effective Urena will at the highest level, so it may be best to hold off a little bit to see how he handles the occasion.
If you've seen some of our MLB picks in the past, you know that we like to avoid backing a particular team if we don't trust either starting pitcher.
Well, that's certainly the case tonight. Locke has been a mess for the most part this season, and we haven't exactly been inspired by what we've seen from Urena in the early going either. As a result, we think there's a good chance this game's final score will finish higher than the posted total of eight.
Yes, these aren't the two most prolific offenses in the majors, but there will be some big-time hitters taking part tonight, including power bats in the form of Giancarlo Stanton and Andrew McCutchen. We look for the two starters to struggle and therefore will be backing the OVER to come through at the sportsbooks.
