The Cubs are 70-30 L100 vs. RHP, 60-24 L84 Game 1’s and 36-16 L52 Mondays, so with the Phillies coming to Wrigley and Chicago returning home from a long road trip, backing the Cubs and laying the price seems the best pick for this series opener from the Windy City’s North Side.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Chicago Cubs

LHP Brett Anderson (2-0, 3.54 ERA) and Cubs (12-11) return home to  Wrigley Field on Monday to face RHP Vince Velasquez (1-2, 6.33 ERA) and the Phillies (11-12) in Game 1 of their 4-game series. Sportsbooks have the Cubs -165 favorites with the total not posted yet due to the windy conditions. The Phillies are scheduled to send Jeremy Hellickson (4-0) to the mound Tuesday against the Cubs Jon Lester in Game 2 (8:05 pm ET), Jerad Eickhoff vs. Jake Arrieta in Game 3 Wednesday (8:05 pm ET) with Zach Elfin slated to go against John Lackey in Game 4 Thursday (2:20 pm ET).

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies and manager Pete Mackanin are in the midst of a nasty, early regular season 7-game road trip against the two toughest teams in the Senior Circuit—the Cubs and the Dodgers—with Los Angeles sweeping Philadelphia with a 5-3 win in Game 3 on Sunday from Chavez Ravine in Lalaland. On Sunday the Phillies had a starting lineup of 2B Hernández, SS Galvis, LF Nava, 3B Franco, CF Altherr, RF Saunders, 1B Joseph, C Rupp with Nick Pivetta getting the cowhide and making his MLB debut.

Philadelphia is 25-51 L76 vs. teams with winning records, 19-41 L60 vs. NL Central, 5-16 L21 on the road and 9-23 L32 Mondays, so the Side Trends are anti-Philadelphia. The Over is 6-0 L6 Phillies Road games and 6-1 Velasquez’s L7 Starts against Teams with Winning Records.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs head home to the Friendly Confines and Wrigleyville after a 5-4 Road trip (CIN-PIT-BOS) which saw the Cubs break out of an offensive slump. In Game 3 on Sunday, Cubs manager Joe Maddon had a starting lineup of DH Schwarber, 3B Bryant (11-game Hit Streak), 1B Rizzo, 2B Zobrist, SS Russell, OF Heyward, C Contreras, CF Almora Jr., LF Jay with talented Kyle Hendricks starting.

Chicago is 70-30 L100 vs. RHP, 60-24 L84 Game 1’s and 36-16 L52 Mondays as well as 37-16 L53 at Home. And as we noted in depth here at Sportsbook Review, the Cubs have evolved into an Under team at Wrigley Field, going 51-25-3 L78 Chicago home dates (68.9%) although the Over is 5-1 L5 Monday dates, 10-1 L11 on Grass and 16-5 L21 vs. Starting Pitchers with WHIPs 1.30+.

Chicago Weather, Series Trends

TWC forecast for Chicago on Monday night calls a potentially nasty May Day with Flash Flood warnings in Chicagoland. Gusty Winds of 20-30 mph predicted here with a chilly Low of 42°. Velasquez (6.22 ERA) has been hit hard so far this season for Philadelphia while Anderson (2-0) registered a quality start vs.Pittsburgh last outing although he allowed 6 Walks.

Chicago is 5-1 L6 meetings with the Under 5-1 L6 in the Windy City should indeed be windy Monday night. With the Phils 2-11 L13 Velasquez Grass Starts, on a 3-game losing streak and 4-8 on the Road, backing the hot-hitting Cubs is our MLB Pick.
