Let's see who we like as our MLB Picks of the Day as we're one week away from the month of September and this is the time when the unexpected occurs.

San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Salvaging a Game
This is definitely the biggest game of the day where a divisional race is concerned as the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (71-55) have really taken advantage of the San Francisco Giants (68-58) in the first two games of this series. Each game has a two-game swing and the Giants are now 3 games behind Los Angeles for 1st place after leading the division for practically the entire season.

The Giants can ill-afford to lose a 5th straight game overall and be 4 games behind the Dodgers. The importance of this game is immense as division titles translate to home-field advantage in the playoffs in certain instances and it also assures a respective team that they have a playoff spot locked up.

Since acquiring tonight's starting pitcher, Matt Moore (7-10, 4.18 ERA) the Giants bullpen and lack of run support has done Moore no favors. He's 0-3 as a member of the Giants and in his last 4 starts, he's allowed a respectable 12 runs on 17 hits in 23 innings.

Even though Moore will only provide 6 innings per start at best, he's certainly pitched well enough to win a couple of games and has gotten the short end of the stick. That said, the Giants have the advantage in starting pitching as the Dodgers send Ross Stipling (3-4, 4.04 ERA) to the mound and Stripling has been a part-time reliever, part-time starter and has pitched really poorly at home (4.76 ERA). While the Giants definitely have the edge in starting pitching in this game, they need to score some runs or they'll be looking at another loss.

Although Corey Seager has been the biggest threat on this Los Angeles Dodgers team, the Dodgers need Adrian Gonzalez, who has star power, to carry his weight. Lately, Gonzo has been stepping up in a major way as he now has his batting average for the season over .300 to go along with 15 HR and 73 RBI. In his last 28 at-bats, Gonzalez has 10 hits, 3 HR and 11 RBI. He's also hit the San Francisco Giants well. In 48 at-bats against the Giants, he's hitting .313 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. When Adrian Gonzalez play's well, the Dodgers seem to play well and that's why they're on this 4 game winning streak.

Winning is contagious when the leaders of the team play well and despite having a lack of quality starting pitching in this game, look for the Dodgers offense to carry them to a 5th consecutive win and separate themselves that much farther from the Giants where the divisional standings are concerned.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Too Little, Too Late
While the Pittsburgh Pirates (63-61) seek a wild-card spot as the Chicago Cubs have the division cinched up, the Milwaukee Brewers have nothing to play for, but pride and the Brewers have won 4 straight games and are 36-29 at Miller Park. As the home underdog, there's some nice value in Milwaukee as starter, WIly Peralta (6-9, 5.00 ERA) desperately looks to get on track after having an atrocious season thus far.

Sometimes when a pitcher, who is around .500 for his career and having a lousy season, can come up with a gem when least expected and the Brewers need that here as they're looking for something to build upon as we've almost reached the month of September.

His record is a little deceiving as Peralta hasn't received a ton of run support from the Brewers offense. In the month of August, Peralta has allowed 7 earned runs in 18 innings and that's rather good. We throw out the fact that opposing hitters have hit an amazing .337 off of him all season long and his play of late and Milwaukee's success as of late, warrant's a look from the bettor.

No Need For PED's
Ryan Braun is starting to figure this out as he leads the Milwaukee Brewers in hitting and is coming off of a 2 home run game in a 7-1 victory over Colorado last night. Braun is .323 at home, .350 against Pittsburgh, and is a real threat to Pittsburgh and their chances of making the post-season everytime he steps up to the plate. Look for Ryan Braun to play well as the Brew Crew look to extend their winning streak for your MLB picks.
