The Braves have had a tough start to begin the year and Red Sox seem to be one of the better contenders in the AL. For their matchup today we are going to look at the total set by MLB odds makers.

MLB odds makers have set the total for this game at 8.5 at most places. For one of my MLB picks today I will back under the total like at Heritage  Sports +100. Although playing the over can be the popular pick in the American league I like for both of these pitchers to have a solid day on the mound.

Atlanta Braves
Jhoulys Chacin gets the start and comes in with a 3.18 ERA and 1.06 whip with Atlanta hitting .227 as a team which ranks them 29th in major league baseball. The seven year veteran Chacin has pitched well this year and has a career 3.75 ERA and 1.33 whip. Although he has allowed 16 hits in 16 innings he has kept his run total down and has yet to give up a home run so far this season.

He should be good enough to keep Boston somewhat in check although he had horrible outing against them a few years ago, but that was in Coors field. Offensively the Braves have been one of the worst in the league all year and rank dead last in runs per game, total bases per game, and homeruns. They also rank last, or close to last in most batting ratio statistics like slugging and isolated power. This so far has been a really poor team at the plate and they are facing a pitcher due for a good outing. I don’t believe they will produce much today.

Boston Red Sox
Clay Buchholz takes the mound for Boston with a 6.33 ERA and 1.50 whip this season but career wise is 3.90 and 1.30 respectively. He simply has not been sharp allowing five runs in three of his four starts this year versus Cleveland, Toronto, and Houston. He did however have a great outing his last time at home holding Toronto to zero runs off of six hits in just over six innings pitched and he gets to face arguably the worst hitting team in baseball tonight.

At the plate Boston has been one of the better hitting teams in the majors averaging over five runs a game ranking fifth, batting .276 ranking third, and averaging just under 10 hits per game ranking also third. Up and down this is really good hitting lineup but I think Chacin is good enough to keep them to a reasonable number tonight. They tend to score in bunches but are not immune to struggling at times against good pitching scoring just one and three runs in two of their last five games.
