As part of my daily search for the betting edge in the baseball world, I am focusing on John Lester and the Chicago Cubs as they take on Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals in this NL central match up.
Cardinals vs. Cubs Pitching Matchup & Preview
Any time you can get MLB Odds offering a plus money with a pitcher like Lester and the overall stats are pretty even is a solid play, and the MLB odds makers have come out with this game with the Cubs around a +110 underdog. After not having a good start Lester has been solid in his last two games with only allowing 8 hits in his last 13 innings pitched and 3 earned runs. It seems like he has now turned the corner this season and should be able to get back to his old dominant self today. He comes into this game with a career ERA of 3.60 and 1.28 WHIP.
Lynn is having a nice year so far with a 3.07 ERA and a WHIP of 1.19, career wise he is at 3.44 and 1.28. This will be the second time he has pitched against the Cubs, pitching well but getting the loss in his first outing of the season. He is a very good pitcher who is pitching well right now, but the Cubs do have a little stronger line up than they did in their first meeting with the addition of Kris Bryant.
All things equal
There is not a lot of daylight between these teams offensively. The Cards lead the Cubs in most offensive categories but just a bit. They both rank in the upper half of the major leagues in runs, hits, on base % average and slugging. The Cubs do lead the Cards in Batting Average on Balls in Play, but again not a ton of difference.
The guts of this is getting a quality pitcher like Lester with a good number on what I consider a coin toss game, meaning this game could go either way, especially after the Cubs lost yesterday. Lester should have a really strong outing and we are placing our MLB picks on the Cubs, as they have a great chance to win this game.
