The Dodgers are searching for their fourth straight victory, whereas the Angels have been on a big losing run lately. We've broken down the MLB odds & believe we have a good read on this game.
A sweep is within grasp for the Dodgers, who will send out new addition Mat Latos to the bump this afternoon. For the "visiting" Angels, Cory Rasmus will be making his first start of the season, and he'll be hoping he can help his team break this growing losing streak.
As far as the MLB odds go, it's the Dodgers that are clear-cut favorites, as they're listed in the -140 to -160 range to win. You can back the Angels at right around +135, and we see a total of 7.5 runs on the betting board for tonight's series finale in sunny Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Dodgers (Latos)
The Dodgers have proven their superiority in this series so far, winning each of the first two matchups by two runs. Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw did their thing, leading the hosts to two more victories, wins that have improved the Dodgers' overall record to 59-45.
As of now, Kershaw and company find themselves one and a half games up on San Francisco atop the NL West, but it's a race that's surely going to come down to the wire, as both teams look formidable in their own right. The Dodgers, however, have really played well recently, piling up three consecutive wins and doing it in style.
This afternoon it'll be the rotation's latest arrival, Mat Latos. The right-hander was recently picked up from Miami, and after a rough start to his season, Latos has really kicked things into high gear. He owns a 4.48 ERA on the season but just wrapped up a month of July in which he posted a stellar 1.80 ERA over a three-start span. He'll be making his Dodgers debut today, and he doesn't exactly get the easiest of matchups against the likes of Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.
Los Angeles Angels (Rasmus)
It's been a rough week or so for the Angels, who have dropped five straight games, thus falling to 55-48 overall this season. As a result of their poor play, they've dropped to three games behind Houston for first place in the division, so we know the motivation will be there to get back on the winning side.
The pitching situation is a little precarious for today, although young Cory Rasmus has shown some good things at the major league level. He's mainly been used as a reliever, so it remains to be seen how many innings the Angels will entrust in him in the series finale.
Offensively, LA will be liking their chances of getting more run production going, now that they don't have to face two of the best pitchers out there in Kershaw and Greinke. The matchup versus Latos is a lot more appealing.
Whenever we have concerns about both starting pitchers, we have no hesitations in rolling with the OVER.
Latos has been pretty solid lately, but we've seen how prone he can be to blowups, and this Angels offense has been waiting to get back on track. They've got some very powerful bats and are going to take advantage of any mistakes Matos may throw their way. Rasmus has been effective when given the chance, but we're not sold on him as a starter and we're not sure how long he'll last in this one.
It doesn't hurt that the Dodgers have been one of the best teams in the major leagues against right-handed pitching either. In sum, we look for these two offenses to get things going this afternoon, so we'll be adding the OVER to our collection of MLB picks for this busy Sunday.
